Deer munching on my apple trees

Post by jay73 »

Anyone have any ideas - aside from the obvious? They are small trees - I planted them a couple of years ago. I don't mind if the deer eat the apples - there's not many on them anyways, but I don't want the trees to be killed. I know there's sprays out there but do they work?

Young trees have to be fenced in. Go about 8-10 feet out from the tree. If you don't go far out, as the tree grows the deer will continue to prune it.

a pices of big o black drain pipe split will work very well you can cut it as high as you need it .it has holes in it and will streack out around the trunk as the tree grows .this stuff works well becoues it lets the tree breath and grow DUTCH

Black pipe is commonly used ,but isn't that great for the tree. It could cuase heat scald. Which will likely kill your tree. Fence is your best bet.

I thought about a fence, but the trees are part of my lawn, which I cut with the mower. A fence to go around sure would be a pain in the ass every time.

Any other ideas....anyone use coyote piss to deter deer?

My friend's garden was being hit hard by deer this summer. They cept the corn nibbled down until the beans were blooming, then they reduced the beans to nothing.
Someone told him to plant marigolds to repel the deer. He re-planted the beans with a marigold about every 4 or 5' in the rows - and the beans are now blooming with no deer tracks in the garden anymore!
You might try planting a few marigolds around the base of the tree(s) and see if it works for you.

Yes the marigolds planted around plants at ground level does indeed work, but not sure if it will deter the deer from nibbling vegetation at higher levels

Any strongly scented soap... shove a stick into it and stab it in the ground near your tree, or put the soap in an old stocking, or a onion bag (netted) and hang it from a branch.
The scent is definitely not from nature, and will spook off the deer.
Good luck

HUMAN URINE. This works, I know from using it to keep deer away from garden. If you live in country with no close neighbors go around trees when the need arises, if in city use a milk jug. The cure is free and as said before 'IT WORKS'. Will also work if used around emeny's stand or blind(so I've heard).
