The Latest Las Vegas Line – Excalibur Deer Contest 2009/2010

Post by Mike P »

Below are the latest Vegas odds for the Excalibur Deer contest supplied by the MGM Grand Sports Book in Las Vegas.

The Buckeyes

Wabi, Fredbear & kenton 9/5

This Ohio team remains the early favorite to bring home the bacon, errr, venison. With the sighting and conformation of buck 52 putting this team over the top they will be hard to stop. And rumor has it that wabi has actually cleaned up his workbench and found some arrows so this fact certainly enhances this teams chances. This odds maker does detect dissension amongst the two northernmost members regarding who gets to kill what buck and this could ultimately take this team out of the running.

Team VA

Rich - Crazyfarmer - Sumner4991 2/1

Holding their spot in second place, team VA is just a trigger pull away from taking over the boys from buckeyeville based on all the bucks documented by CF's trail cams. Rich also has been putting in the necessary effort to ensure a good showing in this year's race. Sumner4991 however has let last years first place finish for Team VA go to his head and has been referred to by disgruntled team members as Sumner90210 for his new found "Hollywood" attitude. This team could go up to the favorite in a hurry. They likewise could fall out of the top ten just as fast.

The Whitetail Whackers

Smokepolehall - Duckhunt - Woody Williams 3/1

The Whackers have a firm grip (little wonder) on the third spot in the preseason odds based on their strong finish last year. In addition Smokepolehall has staked out new hunting turf and could provide just the spark this team needs to make a move. This teams downfall could be Woody over extending himself with all the driving back and forth between Indiana and Illinois, and let's face it, he sure isn't getting any younger.

Big Bucks No Whammy's

Catcher - Unclefester – Bojangles 4/1

Making a huge move in the preseason rankings, Big Bucks No Whammy's has come out of nowhere to take over the forth favorite position. Catcher and Unclefester are certainly up to the task of leading this team to glory but will it be enough to compensate for Bojangles who Unclefester recently referred to as a "boat anchor" while being interviewed by this odds maker. This team will absolutely have some staying power and just could cross the finish line first if the stars align and Bojangles catches fire.

The Onatrio Bonecrushers

NewGuy - Dereck - one shot scott 5/1

Another team making a first entry into the standings is the bonecrushers from the great white north and they have immediately shaken up the preseason standings. This late entry into the contest has the depth to cause problems for the other teams but this reporter feels NewGuy will be very busy filling orders for the NGSS system and will not have the time necessary to push this team over the top. Dereck and one shot scott are know commodities and should contribute points but will it be enough to compensate for the lack of production from NewGuy, only time will tell.

Team Michigan

BigBwanaD - michiganman – skamaniac 6/1

Moving up one spot in the rankings, Team Michigan has the makings to surprise the big boys listed above. Michigan deer are on the upswing after several down years and with the proper luck, the boys from The Wolverine State could pull the big upset. Then again, based on how their college teams have fared playing Ohio State, they still remain a long shot.

Backstraps and Butter

chris4570 - ecoaster – RJ 10/1

Falling a few notches from the early rankings this team seems to have the potential to free fall even further the closer we come to opening day. The trials and tribulations associated with moving into a new residence have finally hit home with RJ. and his hunting time may be affected. Rumor also has it that he has mounted a rather large SLR digital camera in place of his scope on the crossbow and this is certain to hamper his performance. Ecoaster and chris4570 secretly tried to replace RJ but CF would not allow the change as the team submission deadline had passed.

No Great Threat

Moxie - Horizontal Hunter – Munch 12/1

This team improves their odds from 15/1 down to 12/1 based on a secret video this odds maker has obtained via you tube showing Munch shooting his crossbow in the nude. This film was produced by a well known company marketing scent control products and titled "Before." It makes one shudder thinking of the "After."

Curves with Recurves

lscha - Algonquin – VixChix 15/1

Making the greatest gain in the preseason poll is the all girl team from up north. Though they tried to suppress the release of the scores recently obtained by Algonquin in a shoot, they did indeed surface and come to light. In addition, the recent trash talking this team has done shows a confidence not equaled by many of the men's teams. The combination of good shooting and trash talking just could lead this team to some upsets unfathomable just a few short weeks ago. Is it possible these three little girls could go "she we we all the way home?"

Team Carolina

Grizz - Raydaughety - Tyler 20/1

Falling the greatest distance from their place in the early line, Team Carolina is in total disarray due to the fascination Grizz has with bears and BBQ sauce. Tyler was the lynch pin holding this fragile team together in the first place and the weight could just be too much for the young lad. Ray and Tyler could put some superior numbers on the board with the Texas hunt but this odds maker feels it will be too little too late to overcome grizz's bear fetish.

Team Dry Fire

TPM - Doemaster - xbowkidd. 25/1

Despite all the shooting this team has been doing over the summer, Styrofoam animals will not be allowed entry into this years contest. Sure they can hit the foam animals, but can they put it all together under "live" conditions. With all the new states approving the use of crossbows one wonders if Doemaster will even find the time to put his toes into the deer woods this season. TPM is a steady performer but xbowkidd could go either way during his rookie season and affect the teams finish.

Team Alabama

DeepSouthHunter - Sipsey – Chris 30/1

Who ever coined the term "size doesn't matter" must have had Team Alabama in mind. Of course we all know that size does indeed matter and those little munchkins they call deer down there, unlike Smiling Bob, just don't measure up!

Heart Stoppers

mdcrossbow - MrBigSticks – Kelley 35/1

Despite a seventh place finish last year, this team will be hard pressed to repeat their performance in this years contest based on the tougher competition being thrown into the mix. The team name is reminiscent of a bad 1970's soap opera and I fear their performance will mirror the name. The smart money will pass on this team.

Team Ibex

rt2bowhunter - bluemoon – huntone 40/1

While Team Ibex receives negative points for having two team members with names more suited for 1950's doo wop songs, rt2bowhunter is a name that says it means business and more then compensates. Unfortunately this team will never "name that tune" and finish far out of the money.

Jersey Xbows

animal - hiking - excaliber - lady bird 50/1

Even though this team has the advantage of having a fourth member they still have to hunt in Jersey. And let's face facts; you just don't see good bucks "under the boardwalk."

Southern Attack

BAYOU STALKER - 8UP - LIMBS/BOLTS 75/1

The term "Southern Attack" elicits nothing more then giggles and grins since Appomattox! And for this team, unfortunately, the results will be the same.

Northern Whitetail Assassins

Peach - Warningshot – Rutman 100/1

Assassins in the great white north? I defy any forum member to name one famous assassin north of the border. Lets face it, no one ever yelled "Hey Hoser" when they jumped from the balcony of Fords theater.

Keystone Blood Trailers

Bambiblaster - bob1961 - zeke@pa 100/1

The boys from PA share last place on the strength of their legislator's performance during the last few months as they wrestle with the crossbow issue and fall prey to the compound bow lobby. And much like the Pirates who have not had a winning season since the Eisenhower administration, this team will follow suit.

Hey, now ... I'll be hunting Indiana's southern hill country in the Ohio River Valley again this fall. There are some big ol' buck critters in the Hoosier State ... and I won't be distracted by bears while I'm there! :P

We will have to remember to check their bucks for screws since they already have the horns piled up.

Boy oh boy, 100/1 odds eh...that's ok - we love being underdogs.

Once the snow flies and most guys are all cozy on their couch, we will be snowshoeing after big bucks in an attempt to warrant our name.
