Arrow recipe....is it possible

To get a shaft set up that would have:

Length @ 20"
A total weight of 250 gr
luminoks installed
FOC +/-15%
using factory offerings, just swapping inserts/etc.

thoughts?

Sounds kind of lite. What kind of bow? What is the pound pull of the bow? This will determine the weight the arrows/bolts should be. Need a little more info.

You can shoot a lite total weight 350gr arrow in any bow made by EXCALIBUR, 250 is to lite

Agree, TOTAL weight of 250 gr (including head) is much less than anything I come across, esp at +15% FOC. Sure you didn't mean 350?

Yes, I was referring to the shaft setup, with the assembled shaft equalling 250 grains. I will be adding a head seperately. My ultimate goal is to end up with a luminock and BH equipped complete arrow weighing in at 350 gr.

I built some arrows for a friend who has a Tenpoint TL7 and if I remember correctly the minimum arrow weight specified by Tenpoint is 415g.

I dont think its gonna be able to be done.. i may be wrong though. Espically with a luminock. To reach that FOC and weight, you would have to have mostly all the weight up front. Maybe with a half moon plastic nock

its no problem hitting the 350grain weight with the bhead.. just reaching that FOC will be a little tough

now if you cut inserts and play with different setups its possible;)

I don't know the answer, but the GoldTip shafts fletched with feathers would probably be the only possibility of coming close. BJ made me some years ago and they ended up weighing slightly less than 250 grains (with no point attached), I believe they had aluminum inserts for the nock, but unfortunately memory, like vision, fades to less than 20/20 with age.

GT II shaft, probably cut to 18"
Luminock in the rear, front insert replaced with aluminum cut to 2/3

According to GoldTip's site the Laser II shaft weighs 7.3 gr/inch.
A 20" shaft would be 146 gr. 4" feathers would be around 12 gr and an aluminum front insert 31 gr - that brings it up to 189 gr.
No idea what a luminok for the crossbow arrow weighs but it may come in with a total of less than 250 grains for the shaft, this would allow you to add weight to the front insert and gain FOC.

It might be possible to come close to your goal!

that would probably get you close.. but i thought you had planned on using a 20inch shaft? I really dont think it would be safe to use a 18inch arrow on the excals though.

maybe some others have experience with shorter arrows on these bows.. but i'd stick with 20 though

i just did some 16inch arrows for a guy for a special bow and there weight was 264gr's with a front brass insert and plastic half moon.. FOC was 18%

but my 20inch gt2's weigh 145.1 now which is 7.2grs per inch

just some simple math here
18inch GT2 = 129grains
2/3's of a front alumin insert= 20grains?
rear luminock = 30grains?
vanes = 18grains

thats under 200grains just for the shaft assembled.. 300grain arrow total with a 100grain head

take a standard 20inch GT2 = 145 grains
aluminum front insert = 25grain weight = 56grains

luminock = 30grains
blazer vanes = 15grains

246grains shaft
346 total with 100grain head or you could add a 150grain head and minus the 50grain weight. FOC would be in the 12-13% range though

If you file the insert down to 20 gr you can achieve your goal of 350 with an FOC of 17.3%

cf - I use 18.5" with no problems from my Phoenix. (the reason I shortened them was to achieve my goal for a finished weight) The only problem would be if you let your string down (un-cock) by hand. Then it would be possible to get your foot in the stirrup with an arrow still loaded. Since I always shoot an arrow to unload I don't have to worry about that possibility.

19in is as short as it can be, any shorter and the bh will be on the rail, only on the exomax, and equinox
