O/T Sunday Gun Hunting Meeting - West Lincoln, Ont.

Post by ninepointer »

I've already posted this in the Off Topic forum, so I think I'm breaking a forum rule by now posting the same thing in 2 places  But this place gets more traffic than the O/T forum, so here goes:

The Township of West Lincoln will be discussing a request to allow Sunday gun hunting, at the following meeting:

Monday, Sept. 21, 2009, 6:30 pm
Township of West Lincoln Council Chambers
318 Canborough St., Smithville, Ontario

The Ontario Federation of Anglers & Hunters will be making a presentation at the meeting. Support is very important, especially if you live or own land in West Lincoln. Write, phone or e-mail the Council, come to the meeting if you can. Spread the word!

You can e-mail the Township through the Town clerk at:
[email protected]

Councillors phone numbers are found at:

Not to worry :) As good as that sometimes feels to ranter, I've long ago learned that Councils respond better to cool, constructive comments.

Just found out today that at the meeting they will also be considering getting rid of the municpal hunting license (a.k.a. township license) for pheasant and rabbit. If you have an interest, contact the township or attend the meeting! :)

In Niagara, municipal hunting licenses have lost their value and purpose. The licenses are no longer enforced by Conservation Officers or by-law officers, very few places still stock pheasants, license sales have dwindled to a trickle and the are no huntable pheasant populations left. There are still a few pockets of birds, but I would feel guilty hunting them.

The OFAH has recently asked those municipalities with useless license systems to either improve things or cancel the licenses. A Provincial Small Game License would be sufficient, like it is in most of the Province.

There are a handful of municpalities that are still working wonders with their license systems (putting money into birds and habitat) and they should be commended.

Flourish they will not, but that's not the intent. Those are simply put & take efforts intended to provide hunting opportunities for the immediate season, but even that is unlikely due to the small number of birds released. Those pen-raised bird will simply be coyote food. Even if they evade getting eaten, very few if any have the hardyness, skills and access to the necessary habitat to survive the winter. It like releasing a few chickens onto the landscape.

There are still areas around London and Norfolk where pen-raised birds are released in sufficiently large numbers to provide opportunities for local hunters. These are places where municipalites, in partnership with local groups, work hard to administer muncipal hunting license programs that actually serve a purpose.

The MNR's pilot project to trap, transfer & release truly wild pheasants from Saskatchewan is finished. The MNR has no intention of continuing it and they have essentially washed their hands of any sort of future for pheasants in Ontario. The program could very well have succeeded had their been commitment from the Provincial government. The science was good and the birds were good. Ontario habitat and ag practices are marginal for pheasants, but with enough wild birds over enough years, there was the potential to establish some core populations in the best areas, setting the stage for habitat improvement in other areas, followed by the trap & transfer of Ontario-grown wild birds.

Wow, now I'm way off-topic for a crossbow forum  . See what happens Bugs when you get me started!

Results from last night's meeting are:

Sunday Gun Hunting:
Two Councillors were clearly in support of it, but the rest are against or undecided.

Municipal Hunting Licenses:
Looks like the Township wants to stop charging residents, but non-residents would still be required to buy licenses.

No decisions have been made on any of these items yet, but they go back to Council on September 28. Now is the time to contact your Councillor if you live in West Lincoln. Let them know where you stand!

Here's an e-mail I received today:

"We have lobbied the West Lincoln Council and T. M. has told me that counciler Joyner will be reintroducing Sunday gun hunting at a Council meeting on Monday Oct. 26th at 7:00pm
We need the chambers packed that night."

LET"S DO IT! :)
