scrapes

Post by Limbs and Sticks »

I've spent a lot of time in the woods all my life, when was the earliest anyone has found a scrape, this is a new one for me never ever have I found one in the first week of Sept til now, puzzled I called a geezer friend of my Granddads, he's 89 and sharp as one gets what he said didn't make any sense until I checked the cam today. He said a dominate buck will make a scrape or two but they mean nothing now, also said he's seen them this time of yr

Wes, I always find a few the first week of Sept.. I found one a few days ago when scouting. Something triggers the buck and he feels the need to scrape. They are breeding scrapes right now of coarse. More or less, he's marking his homeground like a dog or cat does :P

but its not uncommon to find them the first week of Sept. Its also related to the bucks velvet coming off or getting ready to shed.

the first I have on camera that lost velvet was on the 2nd... I got another on the 3rd but these were all small bucks

it should all shed in the next 3-6 days 8)

btw, im wondering if the full moon maybes triggers this also.. its always the 1st week of Sept. Some say if you find scrapes this early, you are in the bucks CORE area. He isnt going far since he feels safe there.

The one I found was just under a branch. Nothing in it, just deer tracks

Funny, I saw what I thought was a scrape yesterday . . .but, I dismissed it thinking it must be something else.

Wes . . .you are going to let this buck pass in order to get a clear shot on that doe, right?

I sure wish it was that easy, these bucks are on 4 different farms can't hunt but one at a time, Sumner that doe is at my house in the back fields  Dutch I don't know if it's moon or what, like I said this is my first, got the cam right on it, we'll see what happens this week, after this all cams come out woods and go on the fields.

:o :) Well, I can still learn something new every day.

I've also seen scrapes in early September, saw one this week.
Normally, I'd just pass it off as some critter or a irritated deer.
I'll take it more serious now.

I'm getting better pics now in the fields too. Deer :D and Coyotes

The majority of the bucks on our cams are now out of velvet.

Around 20 years ago I found a spot that we determined to be a buck fight! This was on August 25. The next day I took someone in to see it and then there were rubs all over the area and one scrape. I'd never seen one that early and haven't found one again like that. It was amazing how large of an area these bucks tore up.
Keep smiling!
