OK . . .I'm leaning toward the Vanguard. I'm use to a folding knife, they are just easier to put in a pocket. Well, and apparently easier to "misplace". Anyway, I'm considering the Buck 419-5994 Folding Kalinga Pro Knife, has the upgraded steel.

I'm not sure if the upgraded steel is worth the extra $50.
Thoughts?
Grizz . . .I may get that skinning knife . . .for the price, I just can't go wrong. Would be nice to just have a couple in the skinning shed.

I also am not sure it is worth it, but those that have it say it is.
Buck regular steel has good heat treating and I presently use
and carry a 112 ranger with the regular steel with no complaints.
I have other knives with special steel, but I have no problem putting
a razor edge on any knife I own.
I love folders, but for the woods and hunting I like a fixed blade. A strong and safe
knife that may have to do other chores. Grizz is right on those
knives he has as I have a few for when I get the deer home to
butcher.

Dang Bob . . that looks like it needs a 3' handle.
All is good . . .I found my knife. I'll have to do a better job of misplacing it next time. It's a pretty good knife. I got it from the Sears catalog . . .a Craftsman ACA. I feel old all of a sudden.
Thanks for all the input. . .I may just buy a new one anyway.

I'll second Grohmann knives, especially the #1.
Here is a good site that I used in the past to find the type of steel and country of origin for many of the popular knives available.

I like custom knives myself. I've got an old Indian (oh, excuse me.... Native American) in Iowa that makes them for me. So far, he's done 3 and is on #4 & 5 now. These are the main ones I use, but have other custom knives, but they just don't feel as good or hold an edge as well as these.
This one I had made for my father-in-law. After he passed away, I told my mother that I wanted it back. It stays in the safe now.
These two I had made for me and my son. Mine I use, his still sits in the safe for now.
The handles on all 3 are made of burly pieces of California Buckeye. The white dot in the 2 darker ones is Mastadon Ivory he inlaid in there. The blades are made of 440 stainless that has been heat treated and cryo-quenched. The guy does a heck of a job on them, and there's something satisfying about using a custom knife. It would be better if I had made them myself, but I don't know how to......... yet.

[quote="Grizzly Adam"]Sumner, there aren't many equipment choices that I have real strong opinions on, but this is one of the areas where I will gladly state my experience and preference. I have worked up a mountain of deer meat over the years, and for the last 12 years I've used only two knives to get my deer skinned and in the cooler (I leave a denuded skeleton hanging on the gambrel):

shoot!!!! and just when i was going to put my two cents in he had to go and find the dang knife..... glad you did. but any way i don't normally field dress in the woods because am usually close enough to vehicle not to have to drag long distace. i use a good fixed blade for the outside work(skinning, opening the cavity, and quartering) then i carry a small gerber folding knife for the gutting and removal of the tenderloin and backstrap. the fixed blade stays at the camp, the gerber is always in my pocket. hunt on lease in north central la. so not a lot of big woods where you can get away. here if you go a half a mile in a straight line you will usually cross another road of some kind.
I use to many to mention.
This season I will be using this for field chores.
Here are some of the others
This one was a gift.Don't know if I will ever use it.

I didn't really find the knife. I wasn't looking for it . I've been wanting a new knife, just like to have a good reason. I was getting things ready for the season and it was hidden in the pocket of my favorite hunting jacket. It kind of showed up for the season. I'm still considering a fixed blade, I don't have a good one.bill morrison wrote:shoot!!!! and just when i was going to put my two cents in he had to go and find the dang knife..... glad you did. .
Great looking collection you got there Sax!

In France many bow hunters wear a "wild steer", a knife made for them. It has been designed to remove an arrow from a tree!
I would be rich I would get a Randall, but as I am a poor man I use a cheap Ontario RAT-7, which is a very good camp knife. The RAT-3 in D2 steel could be perfect for you.
