i currently have a stand 15 feet up and found no need to go any higher....unless it meant better shot opportunities

Our stands are at 20 to 22 feet up. Once in a while a few feet higher but mostly around 20 ft.

how high

Post by dutchhunter »

it all depends on the cover and were you are hunting .ie if on a fence row you do not need to go very high 10 feet will work in thick bush you may not be able to see at 10 feet you may have to go higher or lower .i try to go high enough to have some cover but only as high as needed most times 12 to 15 feet will do on a verythin fence line i go higherto get some cover .stand were the deer will be and look around try to find a tree that will give you sme cover behind you so you can move and draw .DUTCH

My ladder stands are 15 ft. and I rarely put up a hang-on higher than
15 to 20. Others go much higher, but I'm not comfortable with heights,
when I'm cold or tired or both.

I go as high as the best cover.. but even with that, I wont go past 18ft

90% of my stands are 12-15ft and Ive never had issues with being seen or scenting as long as the winds right. The trick is trimming for stands early or even right after season goes out. That way deer have PLENTY time to get use to things. Dont trim more limbs than needed!!!! Live by that rule

plus I hate heights, so im not going past a level that I feel safe at :P
