When is it to early to call 'em in

I start my season this saturday. I use a doe bleat can, and I just got a buck roar grunt.

When is it too early to use them? Are they just for pre-rut and rut?

I've not had any luck with them before mid-October.

safe bet would be the last week of Oct and first 2 of Nov

I just listen and watch the deer and let them show me when its time to use those calls.. use them early and you wont do anything but educate them

crazyfarmer, do you think perhaps it could differ in the timing for the fellows who hunt further north?

im sure... it will just depend on when the deer start the pre rut.. I wouldnt use any can type call(doe in heat) untill the deer are showing signs of chasing though

I swear by the can call also

that call with a buck bomb is deadly

A few years back I used a grunt tube opening morning(Oct 1st) after hearing some deer milling about. Two bucks, a forkhorn and a spike responded, and stopped at five yards. I let them walk. But calling did work.

I have noticed that the younger bucks are more curious and have had them come in to the noise of my climber when going up in the afternoon ...

The fawn bleat could do some good. I always had better luck with it earlier than later. I would mainly use it right after just spooking a deer and trying to get them to run back in. Blow on it like a wounded or captured fawn. Be ready though, when they come they will definitely be alert and looking for you.

I have had young bucks come to rattling in the early season, but not mature bucks.

lil tidbit.. deer grunt all year also. You just dont hear it since its light and short. But they talk just like us;) Its just louder and more aggressive pre-post rut

if by all means you see a good buck going away from you, it doesnt hurt to call;)

I just wouldnt grunt like a Bull Elk or bleat like a hot doe to early in the year
