Horns or Antlers ?

Post by kanehill »

Horns are permanent, usually contain a bony core and keratin ( the fingernail stuff.) Horns can adorn both male and female animals and are not branched. Some animals with horns include cattle, bison and goats. Antlers are made of a bony substance, not keratin. They are shed and regrown every year. Generally, only males have antlers. Some animals with antlers include deer and moose. (http://www.squidoo.com/antlers)

The deer I shot yesterday didn't have horns OR antlers!

A lot of us refer to a deer's antlers as horns. Probably since that's the term we have heard for years. More than likely a link to our locality.

Are these replies what you call constructive criticism ? Some can't wait to be funny when others try to present the facts !
Thanks for the replies any way, I guess everyone knew the difference.

I found it educational kanehill . . .however, I was raised in the mountains of Virginia. Thanks for the post. Growing up we always referred to them as horns on the deer . . .until someone got a large one, then it was antlers or more commonly, RACK!

I got to go and practice my banjo now.

True antelope have horns which are unbranched and never shed, while Pronghorns have branching horns, shed annually.

I suppose they are deer?

My replies are not meant to criticize anyone, but sometimes the threads on this forum get unintentionally hijacked. You'll have to admit the facts don't leave much to be discussed.
Sorry if my replies offended you, that was not my intent.
