The Gravel Buck
Well, he woulda been if he grew some. Son in law called the wife w/ freebie button buck.
We went and fetched him home yesterday. I hung him by the neck as per usual and made the cuts to skin him. Put my favorite lucky golf ball under the hide on the back of his neck and proceeded to pull the hide off w/ 4 whlr.
Yeah, I know, the one w/ arrow hole in fender. Can't ever live that one down so I'm left w/ beating y'all to the punch.
Got the hide half off when his neck let go at the shoulders and faster than you can say 'awshucks' [printable oh sh*t] he hit the gravel.
Turned a 20 minute job into 2 hrs. We ate fresh 'cut em w/ a fork' back strap off the grill for supper.
This was my 1st failure w/ taking the easy way out, lol. Some of you older members may recall I'm not a lucky man sometimes.
My 1st clue should have been the fact that his neck was about the size of my forearms, lol. I just need to mooch bigger necked deer, I guess.
Congrats to all you deer killin machines, btw. Ain't life grand?

It's addicting, Bob, no hair on the meat, comes right off in seconds once you tie wire the golf ball under the hide. Not suitable w/ trophy types for sure.bstout wrote:Yes...Life is grand!
Dan, I almost tried your method on the doe I dropped two weekends ago.
I thought about you for a second and then decided nah...I can skin a deer in the time it takes most folks to tie their shoes.

Hack job was an understatement, lol. He had it half skinned when he used the rock/truck. I just do enough of the neck to get the golf ball under the skin.
I can still remember having to look at my fingers to see if they were still on my hand while skinning a half frozen one let hang for a while 'up north'.
They come off easier if fresh too.

these boys need to stop ribbing you about having a little hole in the wheeler...
how did that happen anyway ?
anyway... I have also eaten a few smallish deer they are also great and tender; the golf ball thing works really well, if the deer is shot up for some reason, I have pulled them in half, etc.
at least if you dropped it, it was not in the mud, like down here...there are no rocks or gravel unless we import them.. drop your deer and if you are not really careful it sinks into the landscape, not to be seen again.
congrats, good eats are good eats.
