Wednesday morning fall turkey hunt!

Post by perrysbirds »

Well I had a big decision to make this morning.Should I deer hunt or should I go turkey hunting!
I thought with only a few days left to the fall turkey hunting season I would give it a try.I was out earlier in the week and saw some birds in the evenings and kinda knew where they might be roosting.I figured there is lots of time left in the deer season.I get in a setup and just as daylight comes on I look right out in front of me perfectly broadside is this big bodied buck but not a great rack or anything and at 20 yards max.I thought to myself this is not how this day is going to turn out I hope.It wasnt so bad as i only have permission to hunt turkeys on this property and the lady wont let me take another hunter on her property either. After the buck had left and another 5 mins go by(Im Guessing) I then hear what I went to hunt, the beautiful gobble just behind me.I dont have much education in fall hunting turkeys but he did gobble 4 or 5 times.Once the birds were on the ground and I saw a healthy flock of 15-20 birds I figured the only thing I could do as they dtood about 80 yrds out in the field was to try to mimic thier calling with my triple threat slate call. All of a sudden I guess 2 birds seperated from the flock and headed my way and after doing some patterning with my new pure gold turkey choke at a friends place a while back I knew what my range was with this choke/shell combo. The 2 birds continued to come closer and when i figured they were in my range,I squeezed the trigger and it was all over.I ranged the shot with my rangefinder at 36yrs and not even any kicking was left in the bird when I picked him up.Hevi-shot 13s 3 inch 2oz #6 and my pure gold choke worked to perfection.
That buck had me thinking though it was going to be one of those mornings.Looks like I have a nice healthy flock of birds to hunt for the spring also.I have not been seeing many big flocks of birds. Now its time to get me a deer!
