First Crossbow harvest 2009

Post by vaguru »

Finally saw a buck this evening. Came in at 6:35 pm. Appeared at 40 yds, but just kept walking. He stopped for a second to get some browse and I shot. I believe he moved just at the shot. The GT Laser II tipped with a 125 Slick Trick magnum entered just under his spine in front of the right ham. Exited center of body for height through the left ham. Cut femoral arteries on both sides, bled like mad. Turned and ran back towards where he came from, and I heard him crash about 15 seconds later. He traveled about 60 yds. Broke my arrow too! Darn! Have to go back and find the front half with the broadhead tomorrow. I called my son to bring the lantern. He arrived an hour after the shot. We had no problem finding trailing him.

He's a nine point, has G1 on left side broke off, Darn again! Huge body buck, don't have weight yet, but was all my son and I could do to get him on the cart.

I did find the front half of the arrow, it was only about a foot from where the rear half was found. Was just too dark to see with the mini mag lights we had(my son forgot the propane tank for the lantern). 3 of the blades were still shaving sharp, but the 4th was bent as if it was wrapped around a mandrel. Two of the guys at the meat cutter aged him, they didn't agree, one thinks 5 1/2 the other 6 1/2. His weight with a scale known to be light(about 7-10 lbs) was 157 lbs dressd. Wish they would get a new scale. Every one that has seen him thinks he was much heavier than that. After skinning they had to remove 3" fat!
