Blinds in firearm season?

Post by TYE »

It never really crossed my mind till a week ago when my dad said I should put orange trail marker tape on my blind so everyone in camp will know where I am.

Then I got thinking if I'm wearing orange I should probably mark my blind somehow so nobody accidentaly shoots my way.

Does anyone here do something during firearm season so other hunters in your camp know where your blind is? And how do you do it?

I dont have any other hunter in my area,or at least there not supposed to be there.

During turkey season I carry my decoys in a blaze orange bag and I tie the bag a little above eye level for a standing person to the tree I'm sitting at.
let's um know I'm there if they start hunting me.

I've seen several things done(I'm not in a blind, but, I see them out there.).

Spray painted spots on the trees around the blind.

Guys take their vest or an extra and hang it by their blind.

Ribbon wrapped on the trees by their blind
I'd rather wear out than rust out.

Those are great ideas I think I'll mark a couple trees beside my blind.

The whole blind thing has me baffled. You are legally allowed to sit in a blind during rifle season, as long as you still have your vest and hat on. But the blind does not have to have orange on it...the whole point of hunter orange is for hunter safety...

I'm not discounting the use of a blind, but I would want orange on it like mad if I knew other guys were hunting around me...I would put orange on each side of my blind...

With rifle hunting though, do you really need a blind?

My blind has small orange squares that are covered with camo, just flip the camo over and it exposes a reflective orange patch on each side.
However, around here, I wouldn't dream of being in a blind during a gun hunt.

I thought I'd pop it up so if it pours down rain that week I've got somewhere to hunt rather than sit in camp listening to the old farts complain about the rain ruining their hunt LOL.

I looked on the ameristep site and they have a orange cap thing that attaches to the roof of the blind. Neat idea.

What really caught my attention is they also make a snow camo cover that goes over top the blinds normal pattern. Cool idea.

That orange cap for the blind is a good idea.
If I were hunting where blaze was required I would have a blaze camo blind.

We've successfully hunted from blinds during shotgun. We're supposed to be the only ones hunting the property we're on but I wouldn't put it past people to trespass. I sometimes hang my orange hat on my blind.

My biggest caution during shotgun is with the use of decoys. We use the Renzo's - the ones with the images printed on corrugated plastic (like the election signs). When I use them, I'm particularly careful to place them at a 90 deg. angle to my blind. I'm also hyper-cautious putting them out, keeping them horizontal until the get stuck in the ground to minimize the chances of someone winging them.

Tye you can add strips of orange to the blind, hat ect. All suggestions are great ideas, but the one thing you need to do is make sure that ALL IN CAMP know where your blind is going to be. This is to make sure that they not shoot in your blind's direction if they are out hunting. The hat, or strips of orange can still be easily missed visually (blocked by a tree or something).

About using a blind in the gun season, I questioned the MNR about it (orange inside the blind, but no orange on the blind) and they said it was ok. Wha tthe MNR did not want was people walking around the bush without orange on and be mistaken by others as an animal. That was there main concern, not with people sitting in a blind.

OH >>>>>>> remember that if you put your hat on top of your blind, make sure your still wearing one, even if your inside the blind under the hat.
