Any actual experience with Excalibur broadheads?

Post by ob »

I have been bow-hunting for about thirty years, all of it with various crossbows. A long time ago I found a broadhead that REALLY works for me, and have used it pretty much exclusively ever since. FWIW that is the Thunderhead three-blade 125 grain.

I have been shooting an Exocet for a number of years now, with Easton 2219s and that broadhead. Yes, that is heavier than many folks might choose, but I hunt from tree stands, my shots are close, and I like the punch of that package.

I just bought an Exocet 2009 with all the goodies as a back-up bow to loan to folks (like my oldest son) who might join me for a day of hunting and who do not own a bow. I might even switch to this bow instead of Old Faithful.

The new bow has Firebolt carbon bolts and Excalibur's 150 grain "Boltcutter" broadheads, which are recommended for this bow. Now FINALLY with that preamble, does anybody have practical experience with these broadheads? How do they perform on deer?

Thanks for any real advice. I am not actually all that interested in theoretical opinions.

So far this year, there have been 7 reported kills with the Boltcutters by forum members. The average recovery has been 60 yards. 100 yards being the longest and 25 yards being the shortest recovery. No deer have been reported lost after being shot with a Boltcutter.

Hope this helps.

I actually shot a big buck last year at over 40 yards. The buck went about 30 yards and expired.

Last week, I shot a doe at 52 yards. Hit a lung and the liver, she went about 20 yards max.

I also took a doe last year with the boltcutter and she went about 60 yards, but it was not the best shot....

Excellent, that is exactly the kind of feedback I was hoping to get.

With the Thunderheads I get a pass-through 99% of the time, and a very good blood trail better than 50% of the time. They really seem to open the deers up like a tap. So I have been loath to switch.

But maybe this old dog can learn some new tricks......

Just added in Peach's kills and the kills from 2008. Makes the total kills 16 with a 48 yard average recovery. Recovery range from 0-125 yards.

Boltcutters pack a mean punch! I switched to them after having accuracy issues with slick tricks

back to sumner4991.........thanks for the welcome. :D I was here before but could not recall my user name, and all that data would be in a hard drive that met its maker a couple years ago.

Looks like the same bunch of really good folks on here as there were before. As for me, I am older, greyer, and there is more of me to love.

Sounds like I will sight this new bow in, and take it out for a test drive one of these first days. But probably after gun season, which is coming right up.

Boltcutter experience

Post by Michael Stogre »

I higly recommend them. Have taken two deer with them. One last
year with a head-on neck shot, and this year with a broadside complete
pass through shot. Tracking was easy with a good blood trail in both
cases. My hunting partner also shot two deer last year using boltcutters.
Both were pass throughs. This year his son took two bucks using
bolt cutters. One went 8 yards the other 15.

Made by innerloc. These are top notch broadheads. Can't speak for
the mechanicals but imagine they would perform like spitfires which
I have used with success on one occasion.
