I should also add I used Tru-oil which is easy to work with but I'm not sure I like the high gloss. Real shinny. :?

IMO, maple is a light-colored (blonde) wood, and looks best finished light.

I think woods are most beautiful in their natural tone and color.

My two cents worth:

The finish on the left. :D

If you sand down the one of the right it will get lighter and very pretty. To eliminate the high gloss finish use some 0000 steel wool after Tru-Oil dries for a couple of days and then finish with a good paste wax like Johnson's Paste wax!

X2 . . .not that I get to vote or anything. Slightly lighter and the one on the right.

He's making a list, checking it twice . . .

You need to experiment with sanding the one with the oak stain By sanding you will lighten the wood surrounding the curl and the overall appearance will looking great. Lots of trial and error to get the right color.

You would stain and then sand to the correct lightness. This sample already had tru-oil on it. I believe that would be the prefered if I understand correctly, right.
