Phoenix takes first deer!

Post by Gray Fox »

I got out a little late today since it had been raining all night and until about noon thirty. Yesterday afternoon I'd set up my doghouse blind in a spot about 25 yards from a small group of white oaks that are just starting to drop here in central GA. I had 15 foot tall planted pine bedding areas on the far side of the oaks, and a three foot wide stream between me and the oaks.

Five deer moved out ahead of me as I still hunted to my stand. I got in the blind at 3:30 and 20 minutes later had a big doe come across the creek feeding from center towards my left. I put the Vari Zone just behind her shoulder at about 25 yards and squeezed off a shot. The 2219 with 4" white feather fletch drove the Grim Reaper straight, but she must have seen me make the shot and turned towards me as the arrow hit. The shaft hit 2/3 up the neck and went straight through and clipped the spinal cord between her shoulders. she went down like she had been hit by a 12 gauge slug.

She was trying to drag herself away as I left the blind and recocked the Phoenix. I put another shaft to the string and at about 10 yards put it cleanly through the skull about two inches below the ears. She died instantly.

She was carrying a lot of fat in the body cavity and seemed to be in excellent shape. Based on tooth wear she looked to be two to three years old. Field dressed she weighed 111 pounds, very nice for this area.

All in all, I couldn't be more pleased with how my Phoenix, Vari Zone, and 245 grain arrow combo performed, and since I saw five other deer in this 15 acre suburban parcel today, I'll be back there tomorrow after lunch. I hope all the rest of you are having a great season, too. Gray Fox

Good job. That 2219 should give you about 460-470 grains, depending on BH weight.

Too bad we can't reliably drop 'em all by archery shots outside the body cavity ... talk about clean field dressing and butchering! :D

I sometimes deliberately shoot 'em in the neck when rifle hunting, if I am solidly rested and the shot presentation is acceptable. Done properly, the neck shot is a very, very effective killing shot; they drop like a stone, often crumpling down in sitting position. Very convenient! :D

Congratulations on your kill, and I'm glad it worked like it did! :D

Good for you! Glad you connected even though the doe apparently moved at your shot.

Take care...
