The Swede Paints a Whopper

Post by Mike P »

She had the crosshairs of the Varizone square on the chest of an enormous eight point this morning at 8:10. But not for long. He was moving like a runaway freight train.

The doe came rushing by first. I knew one of two things was about to take place. Either a buck was pushing her hard or another hunter had sent her packing. Annika picked up my Phoenix from the holder on the Timbertall and turned to face the direction where the doe had come from. I also turned to look at the crest of the saddle that leads down to the bottoms below. I heard the familiar sound of hooves beating on a floor of dry leaves. He was coming.

He was huge! And he was in full pursuit. I tried everything to stop him. Doe bleat, grunt, whistle and even a "Hey" yelled fairly loud. He never even looked up. He kept his head down and his nose about a foot off the ground as he galloped by. Nothing short of a bullet was going to prevent his chase. It was over in an instant.

The Swede looked at me with this huge grin on her face. She raised her hand to her chest, grabbed the front of her coat and gave it a back and forth motion telling me her heart was pounding. I smiled back and made a "settle down" gesture, turned and sat back down in the climber.

I was armed with nothing but a deer call and a pair of binoculars.

And my heart was pounding.

Mike, I had the samething happen this morning. I heard a distant grunt and here comes the doe busting with a good 8pt behind her. He came by so fast I couldnt size him up for a shot. I dont think he was big enough, but then again he could have been a 150inch buck. My brother in law that was hunting a spot I let him have had a 8pt run by. Well instead of sizing the deer up he shot. Ended up being a 17inch 8pt 2.5 year old:( Its a good buck for him, but one that wasnt mature yet.

this week everyone needs to take the time to try and size up the deer. Also no running shots since they wont stay still now :P

Sounds like you both had a great hunt. I am sure that she will connect.

Lot easier to tote a video camera out of a creek bottom than it is a big 8 pointer. I got about 10 minutes of video of a 1.5 year old 7 pointer Monday afternoon, and......my son killed him Tuesday morning with his Remington 700MLS.....I enjoyed that drag though!
