Southern attack on the board

Post by 8up »

Ok after spending my weekend helping my get her first deer saturday Sunday I started cutting it up and let my nephew hunt one of my stands I got a call to come help get my nephews buck out of the woods Sunday night.

Monday at I took the hocks from my nephews buck and laid them down the hill I sat down at 3:15 and at 3:48 this guy walks out stiff legged looked in the direction where I dropped the hocks. After shaking like a leaf I got it under control and shot him quartering to me. After the smoked cleared I watched where he ran and thought it sounded like he didn't go far.

I gave him 1/2 hour. When I stepped to the wood line he jumped up and went about 10 feet and laid back down. I stood there watching him through the scope but all I could see were antlers. So I waited watching until his head dropped. Here is where I should have went home but NO I told myself he just died so about 10 minutes and his head never moved. I took three steps as quietly as I could trying to see his body around a tree in case I was wrong. He jumped up and ran into the bottom. He is not losing much blood but what I did find was very dark. I backed out and came home.

I waited until 8:30 to go look for him. We found him 50yds from where I jumped him. He was still alive but no longer able to stand after 5 hours.

The Shockwave was the yellow tip which is supposed to be for better expansion. It did not expand at all.

How do I put him add him for the contest? He was taken with a Muzzle loader

heard stories like this many times, don't listen to the marketing hype and use the heaviest bullet you can with a ML. I'm old school and use a cloth patch and a round ball. never had an issue with expansion.
time in the woods is time well spent

Nice buck, congrats.

What weight shockwave were you using? Actually, that expansion looks pretty good to me. I previously shot the TC Surefire sabots and my problem with them was too much expansion. I could never shoot through a deer. Knockdown was great, but much like with a broadhead you get a lot better blood trail from a pass through. So far I've got all pass throughs shooting 200gr Shockwaves with 80gr of powder and 250gr Shockwaves with 115gr of powder.

I found the yellow tip from my last buck inside the deer.

You may want to try dead centers made by precision rifle. I have found them to be a GREAT bullet!
