A good Sunday evening / meat on the table tonight!
As usual on an off day, I slept late… again! But instead of pushing my luck and getting into the ground blind about the time the deer moved through, I decided to wait and hunt this afternoon. Besides, it gave me time to take the scope off my Exocet and re-install the factor peep and front sight.
I had decided to do this day before yesterday after missing a decent 6 point because the little 4x that I had was a little to strong for the thick brush I had been hunting. Those little saplings are hard to see through a 4x scope and tend to make arrows do funky little things zipping out of a crossbow. After getting the factory sights on and set, I managed to be on time for once and slipped into my little camo burlap blind around 4:30, and got everything ready.
At around 5:15 after watching countless squirrels and four-hen turkey for what seemed to be forever, I heard the sound that all hunters love to hear, the sound of a deer walking in the leaves. Only problem was that it was coming from behind me instead of where I thought they would come from. Turning around very slowly I caught the movement of a single doe heading right to me. I eased the Exocet up and got ready for the shot.
She continued to walk straight to me. She crossed a little gully behind me and didn’t have a clue I was anywhere around. She was only ten yards when the 2216 left the Exocet. I knew right away that it was a good hit because she kept her left front leg up while running and I could see blood running down her leg. She managed to go about 30 yards before doing the backward shuffle and then down.
For a season to start so slow, it has started coming together for me now. As the colder weather settles in and the does come into estrus I’m seeing a lot more deer moving. The only gripe I have at all now is that I’m going broke having to buy arrows and broadheads. Over the past week I have lost three 2216’s and three Atom broadheads. Just the broadheads are $33.00 not to mention the cost of the 2216’s.
But I think that I will get over it.
