Feels Good

Post by huntman »

I havent had the best deer season so far. After a disapointing controlled hunt, I have been very itchy to take a deer. But this morning when I had a small 4 pointer infront of me at 35 yards I decided to let him walk.

Maybe it was a bad idea, but we still have lots of time to hunt and im not your biggest Venison fan. Hopefully that 4 point will avoid all the other guys and make it to be something special in a few years

In deer hunting, as in all aspects of life, we make our decisions and we live by them.

Glad you're happy with yours!

Hope your continuing season goes well. :D 8)

I let all deer walk at 35 yards while archery hunting.

I've always been able to get shot opportunities under 20 yards.

Way under 20 yards.
Yeah well 35 yrds is my max!

I wondered about that one a bit myself. We can only eat so much of it but we have plently of people that like venision but don't hunt that we give it away to. I've always said I won't hunt anything that someone won't eat, whether it be my family or friends. Apart from varmints of course.

I think you made the right choice, but that is for each hunter to decide. I hunt for meat and not bone. Here in Georgia we have a 10-doe and 2-buck limit one of which must be four on one side or better. Any time a doe walks up she is going to be in trouble, but the only way I’ll take a buck is for it to be a mature buck or a cull that needs to come out to keep the genetics in good order.

I made the decision last week to remove a 6 point, but he needed to come out due to abnormalities in the rack. He apparently had been injured and one side of the rack was pretty rucked up. Of course, I blew it and misjudged the range but I’ll see him again before season is up. Do what makes you happy brother, its all good.

From what I am hearing, the rut is a bit late in southern Ontario. I would have let the little one walk too during the next few weeks. You never know what is behind him.
I hunt for memories, the meat's a bonus!
