Applying rubber coating to limbs

Post by christo0815 »

Hi guys,
This my first post in this forum, so I want to introduce myself first. My name is Christoph and I live in southwest Germany.

I´ve a relayer 25 crossbow (No.940) , I´m very happy with it, but I really dislike the camo design on the limbs.

I would like to have just plain black limbs.
So I had the idea to apply a rubber coating called Plasti Dip to the limbs. The have a spray to apply the rubber coating.

here is the link:
http://www.plastidip.com/home_solutions/Plasti_Dip

What do you think about this idea? Is there any danger to ruin my limbs?
How much is a new set of limbs as a spare part from excalibur?

I´m thankfull for any kind of comment!

I would kook into sending the limbs off to one of the companies that dip them to apply a finish. It would be safe and durable.

I doubt spraying a finish on the limbs would damage them, but I can't say that with certainty.

yes,
my croxxbow dealer also gave the advice to find a company for water transfer printing. I think that is what you mean with dipping.

But I think this is a lot of hazzle for getting you plain limbs. Perhabs the rubber coating is more durable than the dipping thing.

don't think a set of limbs are that expensive. Excaliper has
limbs sometimes that are seconds from paint not matching that are a bit cheaper. To change a limited edition numbered bow, I am not sure I would do it. Black limbs would look good though,

Yes I think you are right, it also bothers me to change the original limbs on this bow. I think it´s a better I dea to get some spare parts from exclibur to do my tests. How much do I have to spend for seconds? What do you think?

Do you think the adding weight to limbs will signicantly effect the speed of the crossbow?

I used the same product that you are showing to coat the foot stirrup and the arrow quiver bracket last year with good results. It does reduce shock and noise to a certain extent but it is nowhere durable enough to put on the limbs. Besides, I see no way that you could evenly coat the limbs by spraying them with it and after a while, the rubber coating will possibly develop cracks and splits where the limbs bend the most.

So you think the dipping (water transfer print) is better for me?

Welcome to the forum! :D

You should definitely avoid "rubberizing" your limbs ... it's not a good idea, for all the reasons stated above.

Thanks to all comments,

so what I can smmarize that it is not a very good idea to apply a rubber coating to my limbs, because

-I´ll loose some speed
-It seems to be very difficult to a godd finish on the limbs with the spray
-There is the danger that the rubber coat will crack

So now I know waht I sholdn´t do, but I don´t really know how I can get the black limbs thing.

Can someone help? I´ve read in the form about krylon color, but this is not available in Europe.

So if anybody can give me some more advice, I would be thankfull.

@bstout:

So you think I won´t have a risk that the the airbrush thing will crack on the limbs?
Do I have to ask them to use a special kind of paint?
Do they have to take of the camouflash film?
Can they apply a clear coat on the painted limbs? Or will it crack?

All very good questions that you'll have to ask the painters. I'd get on the telephone and start calling around your local area until you find someone you're comfortable with and is reasonably priced.

The good thing about the color black is it's easy to touch up when things start showing some wear later on.
I used flat black lacquer with a air brush, make sure everything is clean, use lacguer thinner to do this this is my exomax heart stopper.
