Third times a charm

Post by mchurch »

I was fortunate to be able return to Coho Ranch for some wild boar hunting. My last guided hunt out there was November 2007. Coho Ranch is one of the best huting ranches on the central coast of California. The day started out promising with several nice hogs being spotted before shooting hours. On the previous hunt my brother was the one who was actually hunting. This was my first time being the hunter out there. We were moving through some oak trees and spotted two nice hogs in the 180-200 pound range. I cocked my Excalibur Equinox and guestimated the distance to be roughly 30 yards. I had a range finder around my neck and it would have taken only a few seconds to use. I got kinda nervous and didn't use the darn thing. I put the 30 yard aiming point and let the firebolt fly. It seemed like the hog had been hit but we found no blood and no arrow. My heart sank. I knew I could have done much better if I had used the rangefinder. About 4 days later the guide called me and said he felt really bad that I came home with nothing. He said it had been a slow day. He offered for me to return for a very reduced rate. I took him up on the offer. The morning seemed kinda slow with no pigs spotted. When we turned a corner on the ranch we spotted close to 30 pigs on a hillside. We drove up as close as we could. When we stopped the truck this nice boar that looked oddly familiar jumped up from literally no-where at roughly 100 yards. I got out the truck and put the crosshairs of my 300 WSM on him and let it fly. I could tell that I hit him but he still ran off. We followed him over a hill and released the dog who started barking like crazy when he went into some thick brush. When the guide went over to where the dog was barking he saw the boar looking at him and still standing. That was one tough animal. He used a black powder rifle to the back of the head to finish him off. When I went over to the boar I saw my firebolt still in him. I hit him just a little above the spine. The bolt was snapped off and my boltcutter bh was gone :( I was very glad we recovered the animal. He is at the butcher shop right now.

We don't have wild hogs here.

They sound very tuff, and have heard they can be very nasty

Is a 180 to 200 lbs considered a big hog ?

Congratulations!!!

180-200 pounds is a good hog. There were definitely bigger hogs in the 30 plus group that we saw. When a boar gets much bigger than the one I harvested they can be less than good eating. I have been told that when you open them up if the boars give some sort of strong odor they are not worth eating. Even if he doens't taste the best he will be a very memorable pig. Next time I hope to get one with one shot from my Equinox.
