Picture added - second down and I am done for the year

Post by WAB »

Late yesterday afternoon I decided to go out for the last hour of the hunt. With the weather turning warmer, I thought the deer would be moving. I got to my stand at 4pm, and got comfortable, thinking I would just enjoy the sunset. At 4:10 I heard a light sound to my left, the deer always come in to me from the right, so I figured it was my red squirrel friend "fred". I took a look, and there was a set of brown legs showing, then another set, and then another set. They where about 40 yards away, I managed to get my crossbow up before they stepped onto the main trail. The four of them started to stroll down the path towards me. Seconds later the stepped into my shooting lane, with a quick whistle, they stopped and looked around. 20 yard shot, double lung shot, took the biggest doe, probably the biggest do I have ever taken. They turned and ran, she made it about 30 yards before dropping. I climbed down and with the fresh snow on the ground tracking was made very easy. I got to her, took a look around and two of the other does where about 25 yards from me watching. My 14 year old daughter has been hunting with me this year, but decided to stay home tonight. I called her and told her what happened..her response was "leave it, I want to track it"
I went home and got her, and called a friend for some pulling help. She picked up the trail and tracked the deer right to where it was, then helped me with the field dressing. Having a teenage daughter who wants to spend time with me in the field really hit me last night, I was very proud and happy to have the chance to experiance this with her. Pictures to follow.

Sounds like a great hunt for lots of reasons!

Congrats!! I too was out with my daughter yesterday. She is 20 now and wants to get he license over the winter. Needless to say that I am thrilled. Both my sons already have been hunting for over 5 years and there is no better "Family Time" than when we go hunting with my dad as well. :D :D
