Custom Made Vortex X-Bow Stock (Progress)

Post by bow4it »

Well I Going to backtrack a little to show what I did so far. Again if you missed the post of what I am trying to do, I will be making a custom wood stock for my vortex. The first step was to get the original stock into a so called digital format. I used my 3D laser scanner to scan the stock. This will enable me to do all kind of neat things to it with Some computer software and the CNC mill.

Sorry for the big photos.......

For the next step, I printed out a scaled down stock with the 3D printer (blue) and I milled one out of a piece of oak on my cnc machine. I only did half the stock since it is the same on both sides (for now). This was pretty thin since it was scaled down as well. I will be cutting a full sized one so I will have one to draw on, cut and throw against the wall when things go wrong.

I am now going to do a little redesign to make it more fitting for me. I want to add some 3D art work to the butt of the stock as well. I made this coat/hat rack for my basement and I want to add this woods scene to the blank area of the stock butt. I also did some cabinet doors for a customer with an elk in the center. I am thinking of merging the elk into the wood scene as well. This is where I am now, but I will keep updating with progress and pics. I do not plan on rushing this.

I am totally lost on this carver thingy of yours. I can see how it does though.

I would like to see any modifications you may have made to the overall shape of your bow, in order to have it be yours. I mean having it adjusted to size here and there. So that your carve is better than the original.

There are people here that know about these things.

You know, if you could get this computer controlled carving thing of yours to cut these stocks fast, maybe I would be interested in a purchase. It would have to be reasonable mind you, but.....I might want me one. I love my bow, and a scene carved wooden stock, especially one unfinished, would be interesting and most assuredly would add value, even if just for me. I would like to make it mine - by applying the finish myself.

Maybe a cool retro leaf camo pattern with a carved scene of a buck with doe. That elk was bad, a bear would be cool, or a boar, maybe even crossed arrows or something historical regarding crossbows.

When you have finished your project, let me know if you are in for making one more. I think this is cool.
