Butcher block

Post by Chuck Gravel »

For a final project for carpentry school I decided to build a end grain butcher block table. what does everyones set-up look like for deer butchering. I used red oak with a mahongony stain and clear satin poly for the legs and hard maple with butcher block oil for the top. its 38" high and the top is 4' by 28" and 4" deep, weighs about 150 pounds.

Super table!! Nothing as rewarding as making something yourself. That bad boy will take some serious use for many years. And at 150 lbs. its not going to walk off easily. :D

Beautiful table Chuck! Like others have said, you'll have that table for a lifetime of butchering.

Was this course for a career or just for fun? I have friends that take carpentry courses or machine shop courses etc, year after year, just to have access to all the tools and equipment. If it was for you career - good luck! I would think that would be a great and very fulfilling career.

The only problem when you build something like that is making the first mark into the surface. Even though it will gain character with use, that first cut is always the deepest. Sounds like a song!
