zipper lube????????????

Post by wabi »

It's time to start thinking about setting up a new blind, and I need to do some maintenance.

My old blind's zipper on the main door finally fell apart (it's been in the weather for a few years now) when my son went to it to get us a couple chairs while we were camping last week. (Good to have spare gear scattered around the areas you frequent. )
I know awshucks will be heartbroken to find out his favorite blind is finally beyond use. (there's a joke in that statement, he gave me the blind to get rid of it because he considered it a headache. )
Sorry to break the news to you Dan, but it's going to be taken out of service.

I have a new blind to set in it's location, but I want to lube the zippers before I put it out.
Any suggestions on what lube will withstand the weather best?
Also, how often should the lube be refreshed?

I just may try the no-lubrication method Bob!

I always have trouble with getting stress on at least one or two of the four zippers on the blind when I set it up. Had to go back to my pics from last year, but there are tree branches above the blind, so I'll try the no-poles setup this time.

I've got a bunch of short pieces of 1" nylon strapping left over from hammock suspension modifications and I'll stitch a loop on top of the new blind before I take it out to the food plot. That should be secure and make the job easy. :D

Do you use the rope tie-downs on your blind in addition to the corner stakes?
I could tie a couple of them to small saplings to keep the blind from travelling far if the wind blows.

My son had a problem in the other direction, the zippers on his motorcycle boots were coming down ( I know, I know zippers on cycle boots don't seem right!) So I advised using "some" LocTite. It worked. Too well. I guess the difference between some and some too much is when the zippers don't come down at all. :D Now he has to use the laces like God intended for cycle boots.

I have used spray sylicon on any kind of zipers. Works good, and does not attack plastics.

XX2 on the silicone, it's nylon and rubber friendly, also no odor and water resistant.
