Minerals. Not unheard of but I've never actually seen it before; a guy I used to work with told me he saw a buck eat a baby bunny once & had seen them eat eggs.

Thanks for linking that, I bet most people didn't know a deer could become omnivorous!

Vix, great link. You know, I did a study way-back-when in a collegiate Wildlife Biology course on deer populations. I remember researching their entire browse but not once was there ever any mention of them being omnivorous...but your video demonstrated they indeed are :) Just goes to show one never stops learning.

I'm no animal doctor & I've never played one on tv but I bet due to the organisms in their stomachs & it's design for rumination would prohibit that sort of omnivore behavior from happening very often; digestion would seem to be a HUGE problem. The mineral starvation from antler growth theory seems to be the best explanation for what would cause this aberrant eating habit & I bet it was regurgitated soon after it went down.

In other words....I doubt we'll be seeing any zombie deer movies on the horizon.

Years ago there was a video showing a deer eating baby killdeer in their nest. The weirdest I have seen is a doe eating hickory nuts. I wouldn't have believed that if I didn't see it.

There are documented cases where deer have been seen eating fish washed up on the beach of either North or South Manitou ( I don't remember which) islands in lake Michigan.

I guess does eat the afterbirth and other membranes after birthing their fawns so it might not be so weird after all?
