Ontario Moose hunting Camo Rules

Post by bgbgbg »

This is the first year I'll be heading up north (WMU 21A) for the archery moose hunt. The regs are really confusing about whether or not you can wear camo or you have to wear blaze. Can anyone help me out, at this point it seems safest to go naked!!!!

I believe you only have to wear blaze until you get to your tree stand during rifle season, i think :?

This should help.
If its a gun season - orange at all times for moose hunters.

Hunter Orange
The objective of the hunter orange regulation is to maximize
hunter safety without negatively impacting hunting success.
Under this regulation, all licensed hunters, including
bow hunters and falconers, hunting during the gun season
for deer and moose, are required to wear hunter orange.
This requirement does not apply to persons who are hunting
migratory game birds, except woodcock.
In addition, all licensed black bear hunters hunting during
the open season for black bear are required to wear hunter
orange except when in a tree stand.
Where there is a gun season for moose or deer concurrent
with an open black bear season, then the only persons
exempted from wearing hunter orange are waterfowl hunters,
as indicated above.
A hunter orange garment and head cover must be worn. The
hunter orange garment must cover a minimum of 2,580
square cm (400 square inches) above the waist and be visible
from all sides. Open mesh or camouflage hunter orange must
not be part of the 2,580 square cm. A hunting coat or vest
generally meets this requirement. The hunter orange head
cover may have: open mesh; a peak or brim colour other than
hunter orange, and a crest or logo which does not completely
cover the hunter orange on the side where it is affixed. The
head cover must not contain camouflage material.
Hunter orange colour standards are generally consistent
across North America. Manufacturers can provide information
regarding clothing compliance with this standard

I have had many conversations about this, even with some CO's that did not know the rules.

As Galgo posted, you can wear camo when hunting Moose in ARCHERY ONLY, even if there is an Open Bear Season in progress. The only thing that could affect this is if your participating in the bear season, then you would have to follow the Hunters Orange rules. What make it that you are Participating in the bear season, I am not sure about that with legal standards, but for me, if you have an unused tag or access to one (party hunting), then you might qualify. When I archery hunt for moose, I do not have a bear license.

Rifle bear season is open during moose archery. While you are not legally required to wear it bowhunting moose, I personally wear at least an orange hat
at all times that I am not actively hunting moose it's just common sense. Walking to the boat to go fishinig or fetch some water for camp etc. you should have an orange cap on.

Throw the orange hat in your day pack or coat pocket and have it with you. You're wearing dull camo in bad light and you bend down to look at a track or something you could look an aweful lot like a bear pickin' berries down in the back corner of a clear cut.
