Just another newbie

Post by Toby10 »

Hello guys and gals,

I have been lurking around here for quite some time now.

I'm from southern Ontario and I have just recently completed my hunters safety and firearms course a couple months ago with my 16 year old son, BUT more importantly I just bought my first EXCAL on friday.

I have shot it about a dozen times and today since it was raining I watched the DVD that came with it.

I only have a question or 2 that I was hoping you fine peeps could help me out with.

First being, I forgot to buy the serving wax. Will ANY wax do the trick like from a candle for instance?

And secondly, on the scope there are numbers on the end of it where the eye piece is. What are they for?

I know they are silly but you have to understand I AM A NEWB. lol

Thanks and I'm looking forward to contributing here in the future.

Welcome to the club Brian! Get some wax the first chance you get, but I imagine shooting it to sight it in would be ok till you do. There is wax on/in the string when new.
The numbers on the scope are fps, but are not to be taken literally, just rough estimate. These scopes are made for all of the various fps bows that excal has put out, sight it in the way the dvd mentioned and pay no attention to the numbers (weird eh? ) I think pydpiper made a post about an excellent way to sight in the bow. I see if I can find it on a search.

Where in S. Ontario are you?

Thanks for the welcome guys,

One shot, I live between Norwich and Scotland, on the southern line of Brant County.

j.krug, I opted for the Ibex as I liked how it felt. I wanted the pheonix but liked the thumbhole stock better. It was just more comfortable in my hand.

I have the Varizone scope on it, so now I've just got to get er dialed in.

Thanks again,

Brian

Toby,
I chose the Vortex for the thumbhole stock also.
I really like how comfortable it is. :)

Does anyone have any insight on my wax issue or do I have to make a special trip to town?

Thanks,

There's a place called Triggers and Bows near Burford and near you if I'm not mistaken. I'm sure they should have it.

If you are shooting and smell something burning....that's your string. Get the right was as soon as you can.

Hey there CDN taxman,

That's exactly where I bought the bow. I had the wife slide by there on her way home from work and grab me some. Man she's good to me. lol

Now on a serious note do I just put the wax on like Bill shows in the vid? The wife said the dude at triggers and bows told her something that just don't make sense to me.

I believe she said that he said not to put the wax on the serving or where ever the string is wound the opposite way (like at the ends and the serving I'm guessing). He said to just put it on the string itself.

Sorry if that sounds confusing lol

?. Wax the serving every 25 shots, the entire string every 100. Dont glob it on, you dont want any making its way down to the trigger unit.

Toby use a small piece of leather between your index finger and thumb and rub your wax in. When you feel it getting warm you will know the wax is getting into the threads. If you just use your fingers, you woun' t do it for long. Try it and you will see what I mean. :)
