Is He a Shooter?

Post by tman74 »

Would you take this feller if you had the chance? I'm thinking if he survives, next year he'll be a monster.

I'd go ahead and take him now unless you get to know him better. Looks like he may have a little bit of a Roman Nose, indicating he may be at, or past his prime.

Of course, if he isn't, then yeah, he could be a better deer next year...if he doesn't get hit by a car  ...or ate by a Wolf  ...or killed by another hunter

Ahhh...decisions...decisions...

Good luck with whatever you decide. He'll be a trophy either way!
Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison; And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die. Gen 27:3-4

Depends on what you want. If you want bigger, then let him pass. If you want backstraps and gravy, then take him. :)

No bad choice.

Good luck . . .he is a nice looking buck.

Is he a shooter?? I personally would put a rage thru his cage if he walked through my crosshairs. :)

For me NO he is not a shooter. Its only your call at the end of the day though. I ahve to ask. Why do you leave all the brush infront of your camera? Is it in a place that it might walk off at?

I've seen too many 2 1/2 year old bucks disappear before the next year, never to be seen again. Would I take the chance ? NOPE.

A buck in the crosshairs is worth about 10 in the bush. If I saw him before he saw me, he'd be down.

Ive let too many walk " hoping for bigger-better next year" only to see them hanging from the nieghbors tree. I'd take the shot if it was presented.

if you had a good look at him and knew him well than pass... I cant tell by the pic but he looks mature. I dont know if he's going to grow anymore.

also, as said why is all the brush in front of the camera? The IR is bouncing off the limbs making the image really bright.

Is he on your property, a lease, or public land? Is this your first deer this year or first deer period? If you think he will make it till next season let him breed. If he is on a place that has a lot of pressure then I'd take him.

I'd rather eat Does than horns anytime and generally fill the freezer with Doe meat. That's why I have let several 10's walk in the past. Then again I have taken plenty of smaller bucks because it was the first deer that year...kind of a get the monkey off your back thing. Most of those ten pointers I never saw again. One of them is my Avatar that grew to be a 160" thirteen point double drop tine. I just prefer to believe the ones I let walk were able to spread some strong genes in the woods and that me or another lucky hunter might be blessed by my decision to let them walk and improve the quality of the herd.

There are so many variables in making the decision to harvest your game. It really boils down to a personal choice and this choice is yours... He is a shooter in a lot of books. Good Luck!
