Drought is over!

Post by HW »

After 8 long years, I finally put another arrow through a deer. Not quite as long as the 16 year gap between deer number one and two. Anyway if I I keep up at this rate, I will be getting one a day by the time I turn 80.

Got out to the stand at 6 am this morning and was quite comfortable, wind couldn't have been better. At first light I hear something walking towards me along a small creek from upwind. It only took about five minutes for the deer to make its way along the creek to fifteen yards in front of my stand. She was slightly quartering towards me. I put the crosshairs on her chest and let the SlickTrick tipped GT2 fly. There was a loud crack as the arrow hit the deer and instantly she kicked up her hind legs and ran out into the field making a large circle and headed back in my direction. She then ran into the bush in the direction she came. I watched her run out of sight and then heard a huge crash. I look at my watch and it is now 7:06am and text my friend Paul and let him know I needed help.

I got down out of the stand and looked for my arrow, which I found covered in some blood but mostly stomach contents. I felt sick as I thought I never see that deer again.

Paul came over and we looked but could not find a drop of blood. Having watched where she went we started following the freshly stirred up leaves. When we got near where I thought I heard the crash, Paul turns and looks at me and says "There she is". The feelings at that point were amazing. The excitement, which turned to fear, had just turned to one of the biggest feelings of relief I have ever had.

I hit her high on the right side at the back of the rib cage and exited just in front of the left rear hip. Because the hit was so high the blood stayed in the cavity. When field dressing, we realized the liver was completely obliterated.

I would guess she covered about 200 yards after the shot, but only ended up about 80 yards from the stand.

Shotgun season opens tomorrow.

Congrats on your deer. Pretty risky takin a shot at a deer quarting toward you , I did the same thing 4 yr ago recovered the deer the next day, and it was spoiled. Learnt a valuable lesson never again ! taught my self to be more patient, wait for the deer to present a good shot , if not ill let it past, i know easy to say when the adrenalin is pumping!

Congrats on a fine Doe!
Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison; And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die. Gen 27:3-4
