Height of Hang-on & climbing stands

Post by vixenmaster »

Most ppl have a preferred heigth they're comfortable with. Depending on the limbs n leaves either in yer way of shooting or concealing you. My climbing trees on this big old hogback ridge i have to go up at least 23-25' or i get busted on scent. Reason is unless the winds get above 6 mph it eddies in a circle & fans out. Getting up that high i have no trouble with needing any leaves or limbs fer concealment, they're off my tree now anyway. I tell you the tick toters here on my place may look up but not at 25' off the ground, It don't matter to me if'en my kill area has gotten abit smaller its still looks the size of a plate. Just aim & squeeze don't jerk the trigger its all good!

I've never had a stand over 15' off the ground, and I've never had a problem of being busted by scent at that height.

That is what I was thinking as well. You might have to duck for the odd low flying airplane as well. No tree stands at 50 feet for me.

20-25 feet is what I prefer. When im lower than that I feel like im sticking out even though im probably not.And I can move around a little more without getting busted by deer when im higher up.

I'm usually 15 to 18 feet up and I don't get busted.

My stands are usually 15-20 feet off the ground.
The area I hunt is flat...and I mean FLAT farm land so swirling winds are not an issue.

I have a 10 foot ladder stand. Some does bust me, but many a buck did not. I have the antlers to prove it. :D :D

12-15ft 90% of the time depending on cover. I never go higher than 18ft since I hate heights!

20-25ft for me. i dont worry about wind while im stand hunting and i wouldn't say i go that high for scent reasons. it just feels right when im at that height and that's basically my only reason.

i de-scent properly so the only time i somewhat care about wind is while i'm still hunting with the bow.

the reason for going so high is on the side of the mtn where we hunt the deer come out from the thick laurels in the eve headed down ..when they come out they are looking down hill .if your 20 ft up ..you will be eye level ..not good..so only choice is to go up....i have had luck getting right against the thick stuff and have had them come out under me..but most of the time the wind blows toward where they come from.so i have been busted a good bit..if it was just me huntin up there its not to much of a problem ..but there are others that hunt it to and those deer get wise to our games,,
i dont like those hights but somtime you got to do what works
