I personally do not use them, a few do though with deadly results. In the top right corner of this page in the search box, write "deer decoys". Youll find some opinions from our members on a thread from a couple months back on this. As for using a target as a decoy...i guess you could as long as its realistic looking. I have had bucks and does circle mine out back and its very old and ratty looking.

I have had great success with my decoys some years and not a bit in other years. I set mine up up wind @ 20-25 yards from stand. I rattle and grunt to attract deer. The deer that respond will come in curious and circle the decoy to get down wind thus being between me and decoy. I also have a real deer tail I attach to the decoy with a string to my stand and pull string to move the tail. The incoming focus totally on the decoy and tail movement. Sure have seen some hilarious antics from the deer the respond. I get the most response during pre-rut and rut.

I have yet to try it but have heard of people using Turkey Decoys to instill confidence.

I use a 3d target as a decoy as do several of my friends. It works very well.
