Sad story to be sure!! :(
My heart goes out to the families of both these fellas.

My condolences to you, Dutch, and everyone else who has lost someone to drug abuse. Have a family member that has gone through hell the past few years due to an addicted spouse. Hasn't resulted in any death, but I can begin to see the effect addiction has on a family.

While it is indeed a tragedy, I do feel the need to set the record straight as it seems quite a few here are misinformed about the drug industry and incentives. While there was indeed a hand-in-hand relationship between Big Pharma and MD's some time ago that directly influenced prescribing habits, this practice is all but history at this point. Legislature has been in place for quite some time now that completely forbids any sort of incentives from Big Pharma to physicians or pharmacists... even something as simple as a giant Viagra pen is now illegal.

Further more, the majority of abused drugs on the market are now un-branded generics, and have been for some time. Incentives were only given to MD's for prescribing branded products, not generics.

Not to sound cold-hearted, but while I do physician prescribing habits are a large part of the issue, we also cannot forget the responsibility of the individual in this matter. Addiction is a disease and require attention like any other -- while there are many who fail at coming clean, there are also many who are able to overcome it.

Dutch,
My prayers go out for the kids, and a part of that prayer is that they will place the blame for their loss where it belongs (on drug abuse) and learn not to make the same bad choices.
Our society if full of drug addicts and alcoholics, but a few of them figure it out before it kills them. I'm here to write this.

Sorry to hear about the loss for the kids. Drug addiction is rampant. Friend of mine had knee replacement at 49 ears of age. Took pain killers to help with recovery. He got so addicted to the pain killers he stopped working. Died at 53 of cancer after only 2 days in the hospital. The pain killers were so powerful he missed the pain of cancer and wasn't diagnosed.

My wife's a nurse and a receptionist. She deals with the addicted every day. As they DEMAND their renewal they tend to be quite loud and unreasonable. Little wonder the doctor writes the script, he doesn't need the hassle either. I just wonder why they're so quick to prescribe such powerful, addictive pharmaceuticals.

Some sad stories here.
Addiction can be complicated and difficult for many to comprehend. It is the tip of the iceberg, the real issue, and often not apparent to observers.

Despite the increasing issues with prescription drugs, alcohol remains the most devastating of all. Beware of the dragon, folks. It starts many of our youth wandering down the wrong road without the skills to turn around before it's too late. Pay attention parents. If you have a friend who may be hurting, talk to them.
