Two coyotes down.......

Post by fratri »

Persistency pays off with a double. A friend invited me out to his place for a coyote hunt with himself and his son. I arrived about 7am we chatted for a few minutes, met his son, loaded up the vehicle and off we went. Hopes were high as he kept telling me about all the coyotes in the area. Our first setup was about a 1km walk through a few snow covered fields. Him and his son were set up in one field and I on the other with the caller about 80 yds in front of me but 120yds from the bush. The caller played (dying rabbit) on and off for about 5 minus. I hear some noise in the bush and out come a doe and fawn. They head over to the caller and hang out in the field for a few minutes before leaving and going to the field with my hosts. 3 or 4 minutes later out comes the first coyote. I guess he can barely see my caller/decoy so he starts jumping up to get a good look at it. I had to bark twice in order for him to stop moving. Once he stopped moving I let the 55gr .223 bullet do its job and down he goes (110 yds)…. I immediately play coyote pup distress but the only thing that comes in is that doe and fawn……. So I just shot this coyote and start playing coyote pup distress and I get two deer to come in, go figure……....Anyways after a few minutes I change it up to raccoon fighting. The deer get spooked a bit and run toward the bush. I decide I should take out my camera and take a few photo’s of the deer before they disappear. I snap a few pictures and notice the deer looking at me (they can see the flash). I happen to look way over to my right and there is coyote number 2 looking at my caller and decoy. I drop my camera on my lap and lift my shooting stick and gun to get into position, he catches some movement and starts to head back to the bush I wolf him once and he spots. I quickly get on him and sneeze the trigger, (100 yds) he drops and spins and then runs into the bush, he looks hurt but good. I let the caller play around for another 10 mins before calling the set over. The first coyote is dead in the field, we walk over to the second one and it made its way about 30 yds into the bush. No blood at all was visible in the snow covered field, for a minute or two I thought I screwed up the shot but upon recover right behind the shoulder. Those buggers are tough. We went on to two other farms, this time with his son right beside me but we had no takers, The wind was picking up and it was getting cold so we called it a day. Just want to say thanks again for inviting me down and next time its your son that will be doing the shooting…… Frank

This last one is of the two deer; the red circle on the right is where the coyote was when I snapped this picture. Immediately after snapping this picture I notice the coyote and dropped the camera. The barrel is hiding it from view….The centre circle holds the two deer.

It is a 55 gr hornady SP loaded with 26.5g of BLC-2 powder... it has been extremely fur friendly coming out of my stevens .223 so far...
