I just don't see what is so nice in this stock  maybe if I gave you my address you could ship it to me so I could have a better look! I promise I will send it back.

Truly an impressive show of workmanship and skill! AWESOME

frisky wrote:Very very nice. :D Now tell us how you laid out the very fine detail of the oak leaves.
You cut the outline of the leaf first. Next you cut two thin lines parallel down the length of the leaf. The material between the lines becomes the vein. Remove some material on either side of the vein so it's raised a bit. Next I use a Dremel with a small diamond ball bur to scoop out the lobes of the leaves. I then use an exacto knife to scrape and blend the spot where the scooped area meets the vein. Not too hard really. Gary

The turbo carver machine comes with a sheet of mylar that is see-through and sticky on the back. You draw the design on the mylar with a pencil then peel the back and stick the mylar with the design where you want it on the stock. You then carve right through the mylar. Once the design is outlined, you remove what's left of the mylar. It's just bits and pieces by then. I used this method for the forend because it was flat.

For the grip, I couldn't use the mylar because of the curve of the wood. I cut the outline of the pattern in the grip and then scraped off all the finish inside the line. I drew the leaves on the wood with a white grease pencil. Not that great of a method. I'm working on something better.

Here's a scan of my original drawing for the forend. Gary

Ok that's it I am throwing the stock I am working in the fire right after I break the glass on the gas fireplace to fit it in.

Just kidding but man that is some awesome work.

Gary, this thread has given me more idea's I have to try. I was thinking of trying checkering which seems to me very difficult but this method you do is just as nice and I like the patterns a lot. Yours is a more personnal method which I think sets it apart. Thanks so much for sharing your talent with us here on the forum. I am sure it will make me a better carver as well as others here. Can't wait to play with all these idea's! 8)
