Walnut Stock (UPDATED:New Pics of carving)

Post by GaryM »

Well Aging and Boo had the same idea as I did...make a stock and take pics along the way. I'm just finishing my stock and have 120 pics of all the steps. I won't steal the thunder from Boo and Aging though as they announced their project first and I will post my series of pics later. I will post a dozen pics now though.

I made this stock with very few power tools. Just a circular saw, a recip saw, drill press and hand drill. Major wood removal was done with a hammer and chisel (the channel) and cabinetmakers rasps.

I layed my factory stock on the blank and traced it. I then slopped some finish on it for contrast. Then cut it out with a circular saw, using a small recip saw to finish the cuts.

I marked the channel and used a hammer and chisel to remove the wood.

I use cabinetmakers rasps to shape the stock. This rasp is aggressive and will really move the wood.

Shaping the butt.

I needed to make something to cover the grip end and butt. I decided to make plates out of some brass I had out of an old motel sign.
Image

I had plenty of time so I decided to make them skeleton caps. It takes a little longer to fit them but they look pretty good when you're done.

Here is what my nearly finished stock looks like on the bow. I'm going to put some carving on the grip and forend and then put one last coat on it. I used Tru-Oil for the finish. Hope you liked the pics. Gary

Hmmmm, gradually I am starting to feel inferior! Geeeeze Bob, you and Mike are really good with wood. Seeing that I dream in black and white crayon I think I'll stick with 90, 60 and 45 degree angles and my mig welder!

yal got me wanting to make an attempt..seriously..thats the stock i would want,,i love the one you (ageing)do and the one you (gary did)
I want one like gary and maybe a little more rustic so i can hunt with it and not worry about some beats and bangs ,,
tell me how much weight does this add ..and do you think it gives the bow a better balance?

I mserius about making one ..i have a friend who is in the tree busness and he has saved a walnut stump.. it has great colors ..lots of purple..or i may do a lamminate,,
Im like Boo .feeling a bit undertalented ..but i think i can pull off a pretty good workhorse type stock..
thinking of keeping it very close to factory. any tip will be apprectiated..

Wow looks great makes me want to try. Did it add to the overall weight, and did the wood quiet it any? Thanks John

Ahhhhh, this is so great. This what I really enjoy about this forum. There is so much talent here waiting to show itself. Get interested, get tips, and go for it. Gary's brass additions are a great example of how we can all learn from each other. Proud to be here!!!!~(except for the Damn Spam).
