Any experience with .223 WSSM?
I have to admit, I am looking into buying the rifle just because I like the looks of the cartridge, but I was hoping to get some insight on what it is all about.
Thanks.
Thanks.

My son-inlaw's police force is doing away with shotguns
in their cars, and going to an assault rifle in 223 with a 50 grain bullet
He says , a shot in the chest will do about 18inches. of internal damage
they carry two 30 shot clips, He said it's a fantastic gun with
unbelievable stopping power.

Woops a double post
Re: Any experience with .223 WSSM?
The short fat cartridge fits short actions perfectly. A short action is stiffer and better accuracy may result if the shooter does his part and his loads are chosen carefully for the gun. The .223 WSSM mimics the BR which won bench rest competitions today and yesterday. Bullet selection in .22 is great with many offerings for the handloader. Powder selections are also very good. Factory cartridge offerings in .223 WSSM are decent but not as numerous as the .223.
WSSM = Winchester Super Short Magnum
Would I buy one if I were you.....yes, of course!
Now, the optic choice.....mmmmm.

Yup a rifle is only as good as the optics .
You can put great optics on a so-so rifle and it is good .
But put so-so optics on a good rifle and it will only be so-so . Repeatabilty and tracking matters .

Big fan of the Winchester super short(WSSM) and short magnums(WSM). I've seen deer killed with the .223 WSSM. They were dead as it gets. But a couple of draw backs to this particular cartridge is that (in some areas) ammo can be a little hard to find. Fewer rifles are chambered in it than when it was introduced(lack of consumer response I guess) and it has a sizzling 3600-3800 fps. bullet which will wear a barrel out "relatively" quickly if you are an avid shooter. Unless of course the barrel is chrome lined. Which any quality rifle in this chambering should be. But having said all that........really cool cartridge!!!!

I agree tired rooster . They are a cartridge that has to be loaded hot just to get the neck to seal . I have seen enough people out at the range with their 22-250 just kill a barrel in short time .Get it hot and plasma cut the throat out .

I would have to respectively disagree that the .223/556 has unbeleivable stopping power on dog/human sized targets. Especially shooting Full metal Jackets.roly wrote:My son-inlaw's police force is doing away with shotguns

By any chance do you handload, Pydpiper? I took a few shots at a range with the .223 WSSM and it was a sweet little shooter. The owner loved it as well.
Re: Any experience with .223 WSSM?
Likely the least popular of the shot/fats, largely because it apparently addresses a problem that didn't need fixing. In all likelihood it will be the first of 'em to go obsolete. In addition to ammo availability (unless you handload) this short cartridge is having feeding problems in some guns. Has to do with large case, small bullet, tends to catch above chamber. It won't do anything that the 22-250 won't do better, which has been around a while. Don't believe me? Just look at the specs. But it's got cute going for it....if you like short and fat. Incidentally, both the 223 and the 223 WSSM are in a short action so the stiffer action thing is bogus.
BTW, by way of creds, I load for 16 different chamberings of rifle and handgun cartridges, including 6 'wildcats.
