Good crossbow article in this month's Field & Stream

Post by ninepointer »

Sorry, could not find a link to the article, but the the writer (a vertical bowhunter) does some field testing and concludes that the pros/cons of crossbows vs. vertical bows balance out... almost. But rather than conclude that crossbows offer the advantage, he actually says that vertical bows have a slight edge in terms of their deer killing effectiveness. So much for the "unfair advantage" argument against crossbows.

Another interesting point was that vertical bowhunter participation sharply declines after the age of 50, inferring that crossbows may help to offset this.

Sounds like a good article.
I will pick the magazine up for sure to read it.
Will be interesting to read the comments about the article in the next issue.

Educating the masses . . .got to love it. I hope the writer survives the beating he's going to get.

Could that be because of old age pains? The crossbow kept me out in the woods when I should have been home. :D

I think the point about vertical bowhunting declining after age 50 makes a good point. It was more like 57-58 for me, but the major reason that I bought the Excal as to enable me to enjoy archery hunting for another 10 years. I even had a bad knee fixed a couple of months ago so that I could have better mobility for the fall season. This Exocet 200 is a BEAST!

It's almost funny the way people look at xbows, told avid bow hunter in town that I joined the bow hunting club. He was happy till I told him I bought a xbow. He told me there's no diff between xbow or a gun! maybe I should take it as a compliment!

So I rush to the store where I buy most of the magazines...scan the rows of magazines over and over....oh no, I don't see it anywhere....saddly I turn to leave when just by chance I see the issue tucked off to the side away from all the other outdoor mags....sadness turns instantly to smiles of joy....quicky I pay for my issue and drive home to read it....open cold beer....sit in favourite comfy chair....scan mag from front cover to back cover looking for the crossbow article....sadness once again....it's not in there....check the front cover....yep it's the April issue....scan entire magazine again and still no crossbow article....take sip of cold beer and log onto forum to ask if maybe it's not the April issue I need....find thread and read origional post before asking if month is correct....discover that it is Field & Stream....NOT OUTDOOR LIFE!! What a weiner am I!!

Oh well at least the one I bought has some good turkey hunting articles in it. I'll have to pick up Field & Stream next time I'm there. :D

With all the states and provinces allowing crossbows now your going to see a change in attitude toward them
tv shows hosts outdoor celebretys bowhunting magazines are now showing a positive sign towards them
where in years gone by they were actually frowned upon
so becarful the same person who slammed them years ago now are promoting them
kind of sad

Sorry about your luck j.krug, but you're right, there's always good readling in OL :D .

Its in the April issue of F&S. Just a one-pager, but a very positive article.

No biggy, my own dumb a$$ fault but I like OL magazine as well.
I'll pick up F & S next time I go.
I buy quite a few mags each month anyway. :)
