How to dye turkey feathers

Post by footed shaft »

Well i promised to do a feather dyeing build along, and finally got a chance to do it tonight.
Sit back and enjoy.
First the list of things you will need. You will need a batch of feathers (ground, but not chopped), a ceramic or metal container , a pack of Koolaid (color of your choice) 2 cups of water and 1 cup of vinegar.

Image

Mix the vinegar and water in the container and bring to a boil. While waiting for the mix to boil run HOT tap water in the sink, add a small squirt of dish soap and insert your batch of feathers. This helps remove all the blood and dirt from the feathers.

Image

Once the water/vinegar reach a boil, remove from the element and add the Koolaid. Making sure to stir it well so there are no clumps.

Image

Remove the feathers from the sink and submerge in the dye( soap and all- no need to rinse them off). Use a small fork to completly submerge all the feathers so they dye evenly. I leave my feather in the bath between 8/10 mins.

Image

Once you are satisfied with the color, remove one feather at a time and run it under cold tap water. This removes all the excess dye from the feather.

Image

Lay the feathers on a paper towel or some news paper and allow them to dry over night.

Image

Once dried they are ready to be chopped/burned to the shape of your choice.
Here is a batch i did for a fella not too long ago.

And here is the net result.

Any question please feel free to ask. Bill

Mind the English but that is frigging cool! I love this forum, lots of guys/gals willing to share their expertise and talents

P.S. You might not get more feathers now!   if you don't get an animal with the arrows at least you can eat the jello flavored feathers!

Its always good to have feathers ready during Easter....When the kids are making Easter eggs.. I make new feather colors. I like the orange ones the best.[easiest ones to find in woods] Chartreuse green ones are next!

That's really interesting. Thanks for posting it.

A couple of questions:
Is there any odor left from the Kool-Aid when you're done?
How permanent is the dye job? I know Kool-Aid is often used as a temporary hair dye, and it washes out relatively easily. Do the colours run if the feathers get wet?

Guess I'll be saving some feathers from the gobbler this year.
(13 more sleeps until turkey opens here!) :)

There is absaloutly NO smell from the Koolaid at all. Also the is no bleeding of the color either, the vinager is what helps "set" the dye into the feather. I have dyed feathers that are more than 5 years old and are just as good now as when they were new.

Thanks,

I wondered if the vinegar would help set the colours.

I will never have Koolaid anymore... It's crazy how strong this dye is. Not sure our body is made to process that.

Thanks for the very interesting fletching topics !

How much sugar do you have to add to the left-over Kool-Aid before you let the kids drink it?
(be a shame to waste it)

Just kidding, thanks for the how-to. I can see some feather fletching on my crossbow arrows in the future.

Fuzzy, there is nothing lost in the ability of the feathers to repel water after they are dyed.

Wabi, i can't even imagine how bad that Koolaid would taste after a cup of vinager was added!! lol
