big tom down..

Post by xbowrook »

headed out with a ton of excitement this morning.. got to my spot a little late. pulled up to my parking lane @5:20 am and could tell by the trees that i was gonna be pushing to get set up in time.. gathered my gear and walked the 3/4 km to my spot. before i stepped in the bush, gobbles started. Damn i thought.. walked in, set up my dekes, blind and got everything ready, all the while having 5 or 6 turkeys gobbling.. sat there about 10 minutes and this loud gobble comes from what seems like 10 yards away.. did some soft calls, he hammers.. wait a few minutes, more soft calls, he hammers again.. did a serious of yelps and cuts and he hammers.. a minute or two later, he flies down from the roost and i can hear him walking around.. a crow flew over and called, he gobbles and man, he is close.. got ready , looked to left a little from my blind and there he is.. big white head, big beard.. he comes in to 30 yards, starts to run at my dekes and stops right at them, struts again and BOOM.. big tom down @ 20 yards.. my biggest bird ever and shortest hunt ever, approx. 45 minutes.. not too bad, 26.2 lbs, 10 1/4" beard, left spur 1 3/8" and right spur 1 1/4".... here's some pics of my set up , blind and bird..

p.s.. i know this is in the crossbow hunting part, but i did shoot with my stoeger 12 guage.. sorry, just had to brag..lol

Congrats on the big bird! Sometimes you just can't do anything wrong. Those times make for fun, but, short outings. 8)

CONGRATS!!!! That's a big bird. Do you ever get busted in the blind in the wide open like that?

thanks guys. . sure is a rush to call a big bird like this in.. and he came in on a string and fast!! i have never taken a bird out of the blind before, but i asked around and turkeys are different than deer, they don't bother them unless they see movement inside.. that's why i wore black to hide me better, but other than that, he never even looked at me... the bush i was in is like that, pretty open but i wanted to set up here because i saw a ton of tracks coming from this part of the bush into the field... figured i'd try getting one before they got to the field, and it worked... woo hoo.. still pumped... only part that sucks about such a fast hunt is that i didn't get to see any deer or anything... oh well, buy another tag and keep on huntin..
