looks like it will work just fine.

how will you take any twists out of your string if you have to when it is tight
Its been a while but I thought in Don's video he said something about six turns
I'm probly all wrong , but good use for the bow press

I have the same Jo Jan fletcher, does a great job :D

good question ..im just playing around with it for now..this string is an old e loop i figgured i would try it without any twists and then twist it up on the bow..i didnt understand the 6 turns thing but i think it was a flemish he was doing on the video..maybe it is twisted to the right length..then backed off 6 turns ..served and the 6 put back in..not sure hope he will let us know..

hankenhunter wrote:Wow Strum, your press is almost exactly like mine. I use a mini chain hoist instead of a boat winch but either way you
you cant beat simplicity. Where did you get the idea for yours? I copied the Cabala's model. Anyhow, I never even thought
to use my now useless press for string making. Thanks Strum for opening my eyes! My bad back might allow me to
reserve if I don't have to stand over the string. Awesome,
Happy serving,
Hank
P.s Mine is hwy. yellow so I dont fall over it.
P.s.p.s If your woried about twists, how about an oversized swivels on each end?
actualy mine is an Apple brand..one thing i did that i didnt show in the pic is remove the far roller and put the bolt back in ,,that way i can put the s hook on it and get all the length i need and after thinking about it if it a flemish that needs those twists took out all you have to do is take em out right before you hook it up ..pull it tight reserve..loosen.. put em back in ..wax....but just a note to anyone new here ..im just experimenting here im no expert..see Boo's web page for the good stuff :D

If you replaced the rubber roller with a plate (1/4 inch min.)with a hole in it you could put a threaded hook though with a nut on the back and you would then be able to twist in or out just like Don says to do in his video.
Keep up the good work improvising is a hobby of mine and I always like to see what others come up with too.

This is the string stretcher I use. Dan (Awshucks) gets credit for the original design. It an inexpensive build; just 1 2x4 and some hardware and it is done. I think that the total cost was less than $20.00. I didn't bother with feet for the stand I just throw it in my shop vise when I want to use it.

It is really important to untwist those 5-6 turns, serve, and put those twists back in. It tightens the serving on itself and greatly extends the life of the new serving. Boo's serving tutorial is terrific, as is the one he did for serving in cats whiskers.

String jig and stretcher from Munch. Even has a thrust bearing to twist under tension. Extends out to 10 feet for stretching compound bow strings and longbows.
