first off, ifin its new... make a oak fire. burn till all coals.
take pan and throw it in and bury it up in coals
next day, wipe clean,, no soap !! take some fat back... simmer it with slow open fire. for tha rest of that day...adding more when needed.
next day, wipe clean with rag.. never no soap !!!
alil water is ok but ya gotta keep grease or oil on it cuz it'll rust.
after you fry sumthin init... keep the used oil in the pan and cover till next time. then drain out and just wipe it clean.... no soap never !!
i'm sure theys other ways a do'n it, but thats straight from tha banks

Re: Seasoning a cast iron frypan
I haven't used it in 4 or 5 years
Guess I'm asking how to reseason it
I will try simmering with the fat

Re: Seasoning a cast iron frypan
My dad always put the new iron skillet in the oven and got it good and hot. He would then pour about a 1/4" of mazola in it and then let it cool on its own. He never used soap on it when washing, and would do this treatment a couple times a year. So, that's how I do it. Seems to work.

If it's rusty you will need to scrub out the rust with hot water and a stainless steel scrubber. Then give it a light coating with cooking oil and bake it upside down in a 400 degree oven or BBQ for one hour. After it cools you can give it a very light oiling before putting away.
As Gendoc said, never use soap. It will leave a bad taste on your food. If you need to clean it either boil water in it and this will lift off most stuck on crud. Or you can use a light scrubber and some table salt. Most times you can just wipe it out with an oily paper towel. But the more you use it the less prone to sticking it gets. It's like an Excal, gets better with use![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)
This is the way I season mine but the other ways will work just as good. Basically heat + oil + use = seasoned pan.
Now go cook some bacon!

The new ones from Lodge come pre-seasoned. But if you're buying one that isn't or reseasoning an older one, I just clean it with very hot water and use a brush to get it clean. Coat it good with cooking oil and put it in the oven for an hour or so and then let it cool off.
The first few times I use it, I'll only use it to cook oil/greasy foods such as bacon or have a fish fry.

Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison; And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die. Gen 27:3-4

Re: Seasoning a cast iron frypan
I have always found that butter or lard work best for seasoning, better than vegetable oils. same with cooking, butter or lard work best. And if you have to wash it heat it right away to dry it, add butter or lard simmer a few minutes, let it cool and wipe it out.
This has worked for me for 40 years.
