Anyone have problems with 100gr Spitfires?
Hello All,
I've been shooting my 2010 Axiom all summer and really like its performance with field points. Tonight I switched to my 100 gr. spitfires and the accurracy was pretty bad. At 20 yards accurracy was poor and inconsistent. I almost missed by Block Crossbow target on one shot. I popped my field tips back on and things were back on.
I've checked screws, scope, string, etc but haven't found anything out of the normal. I've been thinking about going to a heavier broadhead and possibly trying something in the 150 gr. range. Earlier this summer I shot 150 gr. field points and they flew really good too.
Any input or ideas would be appreciated.

Re: Anyone have problems with 100gr Spitfires?
Welcome to the forum!!!!
I've been shooting spitfires for ten years and have never had a problem. I shoot 100gr out of my ibex...dead nutz out to 50yds.
What type arrow/fletching are you using? Only thing i can think of is they may be opening in flight. Try putting a small rubber band or dental elastic around one and see if that makes a difference.
Hope this helps

Info I left out of first post...
Shooting firebolts with 4" vanes (came with the Axiom package). I've been getting good accuracy with 100 and 150 grain field points. Initially shot 150 grains and then switched to 100 grain after selecting the spitfires.

If your using what came with the light stuff package you should be using the stock dacron string which should put your speed with 100gr heads somewhere around 280-285fps...not enough to open up the spitfire in flight in my opinion, but i could wrong. If you don't have any dental elastic try one wrap of electrical tape around the blades...curious to see if this makes a difference.

Re: Anyone have problems with 100gr Spitfires?
I have been shooting them out of my Exocet for a few years without a problem.
I can't see it being anything other than the heads based on the info you provided.
Did you spin test them when you screwed them on the arrow?
Have you been playing with the heads by opening and closing them? The clips are good for only a certain number of openings before they will not reliably hold the blades closed. Once I shoot a deer with a head I clean the head, remove the old blades and clips, and spin test the head. If the head spin tests fine I rebuild the head, put it on an arrow, spin test it again, and put it in my quiver. The blades on that head will not get opened again until it is run through another deer.

Generally Spitfire's don't open in flight, i have shot mine opened to see what the diff in accuracy was. Weren't a 1/4" diff out at 30 yds. Sumpin else is going down with yer set-up. I have a 100 gr head thats killed a deer & a hog & a rock or 2 along the killin path. I just resharpened the blades & ready fer this seasons opening!

Re: Anyone have problems with 100gr Spitfires?
Based on everyone's feedback, I checked the head I was shooting and the one blade was noticeably loose. I plan on shooting the other heads tonight to see how they fly. Hopefully that will work.
thanks for all the feedback.

Re: Anyone have problems with 100gr Spitfires?
Can somebody remind me what weight field points come with the axiom package?
I want to say they are 125s, but I can't remember.
I'll be buying some broadheads pretty soon and I'd like to keep same weight up front that I've been practicing with.
Thanks

Re: Anyone have problems with 100gr Spitfires?
I got things worked out last night. I believe it was the loose blade, tried a new head and things worked out real quick. The spitfires shot about 2" low and 1" to the left of my field tips. After I got them zeroed in they were very consistent. Had to move my target dot so I didn't tear a gaping hole in my Block.
Axiom package comes with 150 gr.field points I believe.

Must be something wrong with your field points.cumberlandxbow wrote: The spitfires shot about 2" low and 1" to the left of my field tips.
My Spitfires pile on top of my field points. Seriously, unless they are of different weights, there is no reason for them shooting lower than your field tips.
Even a loose blade will fly straight unless it opens up prematurely. I use dental elastics on mine and they are dead on.
I'd rather wear out than rust out.

I have never had a Spitfire not have the same POI as field tips. At any range or from any bow.

shoot the spitfire through a sheet of paper to see if the blades are opening up prematurely. mine were. got some great tips about using dental elastics to keep
them closed.
them closed.
Re: Anyone have problems with 100gr Spitfires?
I shot spitfire xp's and x-act's. The x-act's were twice as accurate. I was not happy with the performance of the spirtfire's. Buy some x-act's.
