angle of shot

Post by Shotnbeer »

All my hunting is done from the ground with my Vortex My scope is hitting right on at 20 and 30 yards. If I move to a tree stand, say about 15 ft up, will I still aim right on, high or low?

Aim dead on... 15ft amounts to nothing...

Practice like you hunt...

Your zero will be very close but you will want to take in consideration the path of the bolt through the body of the deer it will exit lower than it goes in so depending on the severity of the angel you will want to shoot at a higher entry spot.
I hope I explained this well enough to understand.

That takes the mystery out of it Kirtk. Good explination.
As I've never had to shoot a seriously sharp angle, I never had to worry about the small difference it made to me with the limited angles in the bush here. I do have a rangefinder with angle compensation, but its handy to know how to judge it yourself. I don't like relying totally on technology.

If you bend at the waist properly & not drop your arm you should be able to Aim right on .

If you're 15 ft off the ground and shooting at an angled distance of 20 yds. you would be shooting at approx. a 10 degree angle. That would make the horizontal distance approx. 19.7 yds. which only amounts to a difference of 0.3 of a yard. Shooting at 30 yards, the angle would slightly steeper and therefore the difference would be 0.5 yd.
In both cases your POA and POI wouldn't be that much different.

The only time one might consider compensating is when shooting at very steep angles. For example if shooting at a 45 degree angle, and the horizontal distance is 30 yards, aim as if you're shooting at a distance of 21.2 yards.

NB: To be shooting at an angle of 45 degrees, one would have to either be approx. 84 ft up a tree. or shooting down or up a steep hill.

Thanks for the info. Reason I asked, I applied for and was chosen as a managment hunter in the area I live. This means I have access to hunt restricted areas and parks to hunt deer. At the last minute they required a proficency test which required shooting from a tree stand which I have not done for years and didn't have time to practice. To old to jump down from 10 ft anymore. My property borders one of the parks so I feel like I won the lottery. It was a 10 year wait with applying every year to finally get chosen. :D
