1st harvest of the season...1st day out with pics

Post by slider »

My buddy from the Muskokas came down this wkd to hunt deer with me...I had not hunted yet but did have a few cameras out as well as stands ready to go....seems like a few deer around this year. Sure was windy weather to hunt!!

Hunted the same stand morning and evening ( deep in the woods in cedars). My buddy was breaking in a new stand location for me on a different property about 1 km away. At 6:50pm this guy came down the trail to my stand.

Image

11 yard shot with the Phoenix...nap spitfires....the deer was very close to me and put his nose to the ground facing me. I put the bolt down in his back between the shoulder and vertebrae(should have waited)......3 feet in front of my trail camera. I was not confident with the shot as I saw the bolt(luminock) snap in half as the buck run away. Found the bolt very close to the shot ...6 inches still in the deer. Decided not to track right away and hooked up with my buddy for a quick sub at Subway before we went back in the bush.

The high shot with no exit left very little blood but easy to track with blood starting 15 yards from the shot. 60 yard recovery...found in 10 mins...very dead with massive internal bleeding as the lungs were disconnected from the heart.

Image

Got the ATV within 150 yards but used the deer cart to get to the bike. I am sure glad my buddy was there to help get the buck out of the bush! Trail cam pic at shot location as we went by it on the way out....good thing I had shut the camera off in the morning hunt or the flash may have scared the deer.

Image

Not a monster( my guess 2.5 yr old )but I am very happy to have some early meat in the freezer!!

I feel kind of sad about this one as I have 2 pictures of him at the same location one moth prior to the harvest...sort of torn about not letting him walk but I am a meat hunter and he will be a trophy on my plate.

Thanks for reading...cam pics below!

That's a trophy any day with a bow!! Congrats on a fine looking deer!
Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison; And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die. Gen 27:3-4

Congratulations. looks like the same guy who came by me saturday morning around 8am at 50yds,just out of my range. I've limited myself to 30yds.He'll be back. If I had placed my stand in the 1st tree I looked at he would have been at 15yds.

First harvest ever? Or first this season.

Whichever, that's a fine deer in anyone's book. Nothing better for chops, steaks, roasts, and ground.

There's always a twinge or regret, and thankfulness, for a fallen animal, which is the way it should be. Throw a couple chops on the BBQ and it'll be an excellent way to recall the experience.

Sorry...should clarify.....1st deer of the season Maple....my 1st day out thanks to my Buddy telling me "its time to hunt"

Got my Phoenix in Dec 08 so this is my 3rd (2011) full season with it...love it and how it shoots...I know what I can do with it under 25 yrds

This is the 11th deer I have taken with my excal....this stand location is a very tight trail intersection with no shot available over 15 yards...great on windy days and a change from stands that cover field edges.

Pulling it out of the cooler today to butcher but have already eaten the inside tenderloins....delicious!!

That's what it's all about right there. Hunting shouldn't be about the biggest rack. It's about getting some good fresh meat, experiencing nature, and spending time with friend/family.

Congrats on a great deer! Any animal harvested legally and ethically is a trophy in my book!
