Equinox/Exomax shooters... What broadheads do you use?

Post by cpwrestler »

Just curious what people recommend for broadheads out there. Excal says 150gr. is the best for accuracy but what do the real field testers say?

Maybe an easier question is what SHOULDN'T I use for the exomax

The reason for recommending the 150 grain is to get the FOC (front of center) weight where it should be. There's several ways of doing it, but the easiest way is to use a heavy broadhead on a "standard" arrow. Look around the forum and you'll see other things that people do to get good flight out of their arrows.

That being said, I shoot the 150 grain Boltcutters out of my Equinox. They're heavy duty and have been proven over and over again.

I shoot 100gr spitfires and have just ordered some 100 grain grim reapers. I tried the bolt cutters and was not impressed at all. I shot 1 deer with them and had a poor blood trail. 1 1/8" cut is not enough for me. "If" the shot is a little off a larger cutting blade will help in recovery. The guy I spoke with at excal told me the the added weight on the front of the arrow was just to benefit people who shot fixed blade broadheads. He said it had little to no effect when using mechanicals. I use weight forward arrows anyway.

Third season with 100 gr. Grim Reapers, but this year I went up to the 1 3/4" cut (needed to add an elastic for these).

Hmmmm.....I have a BUNCH of the smaller GR heads and extra parts if anyone is looking for some. I should put together a trading post ad. :)
If you can't set a good example, at least serve as a horrible warning.

First year with a crossbow and started with boltcutters / firebolts. Very pleased with accuracy. Recovered 4 of 5 deer shot. Being honest, felt like a more damaging bh may have made a difference with the one that was lost, but will say that I am thus far happy with boltcutters.

I shoot 175 grain slick tricks on a fire bolt very accurate hits a coupple inches lower than the field point at 30 yards but I only practice with the broad heads during hunting season any way and will shoot the field points in the summer. A very tuff head good results an 2 deer last year.

Anything that isn't perfect.

The higher speeds require a tighter quality control and less things that have the ability to plane.

That's one of the reasons I use mechanicals. There are fewer things that can hinder your accuracy and the large amount of cutting surface is a big plus.

After my recent hunt, I'm looking for a broadhead with a ten inch blade. :)

Thanks for the replies. I'm thinking of picking up a lot of broad heads that had a bunch of mechanicals and a couple fixed blades too. Seems like it might be worth it.

At around $30 per 3 pack, you may want to hold off on that. It can get a little expensive. If you're just starting out, and since it's the fall and deer seasons are open, I would stick with a standard configuration that has been proven to work, such as Excalibur Firebolts and the Boltcutters. Get your bow sighted in for those and hunt with that this fall.

This next spring/summer, you'll have time to mess around with different configurations of arrows/heads and find one you like. Talk to some of your buddies and see if you can get a broadhead off of them. Chances are, you'll find quite a few different heads doing this. Then, when you've got the time to do it, mess around with them and see what you like the best.
