Great Evening in the blind!

Post by DaGriz »

Yesterday evening was one of those times when it was just good to be alive and able to sit peacefully in my 'Penthouse blind. The sun made the woods very beautiful even though there are no leaves on the trees. The area where the feeder throws the corn was alive with squirrels, bluejays and snowbirds. My friend Mr field mouse was busier than usual and the damn hairy tree rat would steal Mr Mousey's stash every so often I felt like feathering the rodent but enjoyed watching, Long about a hour after I was there two medium sized does wandered in and had a minor disagreement about who should eat first. Suddenly they stopped and went on full alert. Three more does and a forkhorn rushed in like they were late for dinner. It almost got to be a tag team match as they jockeyed for feeding spots. Pushing and rearing up, ears back posturing like they were 300lb monster deer. 10 minutes or so later the matriarch doe showed up and put everyone in their place, Pecking order established , the circus settled down.
I decided to shoot the big bitch as she was by and far the largest and appeared to be barren. Plus she was a ornery old bitch, She used to let any other deer get closer than 3ft to where she was eating. After trying to have a clear shot where I wouldn't shot through her and arrow a second deer, she finally was in the clear after 10 anxious minutes of watching.
I kind of hated to end the show but it was getting to be dusk and I knew i only had 20 minutes or so of legal shooting time. I put the Y25 up and on the bipod and carefully chose my spot. Squeezed it off and watched the arrow go sailing through her/ All hell broke lose as there were deer running in multiple directions. I watched as she ran off with her tail down. She made it about 35yds and piled up, A perfect shot and clean kill. I walked up to her and honored her with a gesture of appreciation that she gave her life so my wife and I would have venison.
After field dressing and dragging her out to my truck, I took her to the processor.
It was the end of a great evening in the woods. The kill made me a bit sad to see the evening end.

Cool, your granddaughter lent you the Y25 back to use. Thought you had nothing but an old Barnett Commando. Was looking forward to picture with the Barnett.

My son brought the Y25 with him and left it and the crossbow I gave him, here until he comes back from Afghanistan next November. So I used the Y25, Granddaughter won't hunt until her dad comes home and doesn't mind my using it!

That old Barnett Commando kind of scares me, It's pretty much a wall hanger!

Sorry guys no pictures. I forgot my camera at home. Nobody wants to see an old man and a dead deer.

I try to practice quality deer management as best I can. I don't shoot smaller bucks, nor yearlings and try to shoot only mature barren does. I will shoot a small buck if I see he is growing deformed a horns. But I wait until I see him two years in a row. Keeping the genetic pool clean to insure good breeding stock is one of the best things to maintain a good deer herd.

Congrats Darrel,
I am sure your son and granddaughter is proud that you are using the Y25, and that you are still willing and able go hunting. I would like to see Darrel and a dead deer picture. I wish my Dad was still here and hunting. Keep it up Darrel. I am proud to know you and hear about your adventures. Thanks.
