I need honest answers
The wife wants to move to Texas
For my 50 yr birthday
She wants to pay for me to go to a Ted camp
She does not know I want to move to Texas also
But should I take this chance to hunt with Uncle Ted
( my answer already is HELL YES)

Somewhere in the conversation I would drop the line, "I'll probaly feel embarassed using my old bow" Maybe I should just wait". and see if she takes the bait.

Re: I need honest answers
I'd say HELL YES on hunting with Uncle Ted, just not sure I'd trade OHIO for TEXAS!!! I lived outside of Houston for ten years and moved back home to OKLAHOMA about 3 years ago. There were things I liked about the state and things I didn't, but the Pro's don't outweigh the Con's enough for me to move back.
If you like to deer hunt and you're use to having public land to hunt, then you'll need to rethink the move. Unless of course Uncle Ted gives you the keys to the Ranch and tells you to "Whack 'em all my Blood Brother".
And since we're talkin' hunting and Uncle Ted, here's a little something for all you Ted Heads! (I love this song!!)

Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison; And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die. Gen 27:3-4

Re: I need honest answers
Plenty of state and federal land to hunt on here in Texas, but yes most of our state is private land. This is because we came into the United States as our own country, the Republic of Texas. We only allowed the federal government the limited amount of land that we agreed to let them have.
What part of Texas are you considering?
For $48 you get access to about a million acres, most of it deer hunting. Also lots of special drawing hunts you can apply for...
http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/hunt/public/
There's also 635,000 acres of National Forests, and many of the National Wildlife Refuges offer deer hunting opportunities.
Leasing private land is a pricey option, but you may find it worth the money considering the quality of game, ease of access, amenities, etc. Also bow hunting opens up some opportunities where a land owner is more willing to allow bow hunting vs. rifle hunting.
Limits vary by county, but in many areas you can kill 5 whitetails, 2 mule deer, 4 turkeys, 2 Javelina and year-around hunting with no limits on wild hogs and exotic game like axis, fallow deer, nilgai, etc. This year's deer season in most of the state started Oct. 1 for archery and runs to Nov. 4, and then gun season kicks in Nov. 5 to Jan. 1, and as late as Jan 15 in South Texas. There's youth seasons before and after the regular season.

I think the intelligent thing to do is to send me the GPS coordinates, the gate combo, etc. and let me test hunt it for a year...or two...or three, and then I can give you an honest, professional evaluation.kd8jgu wrote:
