For all the ground huters, what's your secrect?

Post by xbowholic »

What do you do as a ground hunter (no trestands) for scent control? I am a cheap hunter who doesn't spend alot of money on scent contol items but was wondering what some of the others who ground hunt use for scent contol; if you have any ideals please post.

I don't hunt from the ground a whole lot, but when I do, I approach it just as if I was going to get up in a tree. I watch the wind. If the wind isn't right, I don't hunt there or I change to another location where the wind is favorable.

I also make my blinds from vegetation on hand. Don't go overboard and clear cut everything around you. Make it too thick and it will look unnatural and deer will notice it.

I find some thick bushes that I can back up in and start from there. I carry pruners and a bag of 8" zip ties in my hunting bag. In about 10 minutes, I can have a small brush blind built. I've had deer as close as 5 yards away and they never knew they were so close to death

Also, another tip is to try and judge where the Sun will be and build your blind in the shade. When you're in direct sunlight, you're movement is magnified and you'll stick out. Get back in the shadows!
Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison; And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die. Gen 27:3-4

Don't hunt food you will get busted. Always try and hunt the wind. Biggest tip take your boots and rake all the leaves back no brainer i know. But and be care full every little bit take one of your heals and release some of that fresh earth smell.

No secret, play the wind and you can rest your back up on a big ol oak tree and whack a deer, a turkey will nail you, good luck

I think some spots, or scenarios, lend themselves to hunting from a ground blind better that others. Have never bow hunted from a ground blind, but have been partial to them for rifle hunting a utility right-of-way or road crossing with a potential long shot in multiple directions. I like a home-made blind with a very solid rail for resting a rifle on. Good for hunting with two people also, if you want to take a buddy or kid. Rigged a blind on top of a pushed up pile in a clearcut once. Was only good for a couple of years and the new trees were too tall to see over, but the deer and turkeys would almost refuse to look at me on there.

Hope it's a little helpful.

wind direction always plays a major role in any form of still hunting,
at least thats the way it is here in the south.... remember, we eat coons

i been hunting from a ground blind for the last 4 years ..we use scent away soap and the scent smoker and have had great luck ..we smoke up our cloths and gear before every hunt . i won't hunt with out the smoker ....i had a little 4 point walk right up to the blind this morning i could see his nose bumping the blind from the inside ..they smell the smoke but it just don't seem to bother them ..the indians used wood smoke also for a cover scent ..wood smoke kills bacteria ...

In order to cover up the human scent, I get up real early head over to the local Pig Farmer & roll around in the mud in the pig sty for about 10 mins, works everytime. only side effect is the wife wont let me back in the house.

Good, I'll remember that next time I'm working in VA. May start dipping again too if that helps. :)
